Phil Robertson and the Freedom of Speech Lie

Phil Robertson and the Freedom of Speech Lie December 19, 2013

Here are some examples of modern day freedom of speech, acceptable and unacceptable.

ACCEPTABLE: Degrading Women

Lil Wayne’s song “Bitches Love Me”

These hoes got p**sies like craters
Can’t treat these hoes like ladies, man!
P**sy, money, weed, codeine
She say my d**k feel like morphine
I hope my name taste like sardines to these niggas
She wake up, eat this d**k
Call that breakfast in bed…  -Lil Wayne, Bitches Love Me

(Side note: In 2012 alone, Lil Wayne won Billboard music awards for Best Male Artist, Best Rap Artist, Best Rap Album, and best R&B artist.)

ACCEPTABLE: Anti-Christian

“Force your children to read The Bible. If they are smart and kind it will put them off religion for life.”Actor Ricky Gervais
ACCEPTABLE: Pro-marijuana

“I either get people started smoking weed or I put them out of business smoking weed… I smoke a lot of weed when I write. I don’t know if it helps me write. It makes me not mind that I’m writing. And I don’t know if it makes me work better, but it makes me not care that I’m working. Who wants to work? But if you’re stoned, it doesn’t seem like work.”Actor, Seth Rogen

UNACCEPTABLE: The belief that homosexual behavior is wrong

Phil Robertson is interviewed by GQ Magazine and is asked, “What, in your mind, is sinful?”

“Start with homosexual behavior and just morph out from there. Bestiality, sleeping around with this woman and that woman and that woman and those men,” he says. Then he paraphrases Corinthians: “Don’t be deceived. Neither the adulterers, the idolaters, the male prostitutes, the homosexual offenders, the greedy, the drunkards, the slanderers, the swindlers—they won’t inherit the kingdom of God. Don’t deceive yourself. It’s not right.” –GQ Magazine

For those remarks Phil has just been suspended indefinitely from Duck Dynasty.

Okay, let me be the first to admit, Phil’s approach needs work (more on that here). Keeping in mind Jesus’ advice to be shrewd and innocent, perhaps we should always answer that question by pointing to our own sin first. “Sinful is when I think my way is better than God’s way, when I’m selfish, prideful, condescending… I struggle with all those things.”

But instead, Phil spoke up against homosexual behavior, and in America, that’s a death sentence.

The fact is clear. You can speak against Women, God, Christians, or the Bible… but don’t you dare share you belief that homosexual activity is wrong. Ask Victoria Jackson, or Blake Shelton… or Chick filA!
