Radical Pantheist: The Many Faces of the Unicorn – Angela Wix Interview

Radical Pantheist: The Many Faces of the Unicorn – Angela Wix Interview January 29, 2020

Angela Wix started reading books on psychic development, Angels, and metaphysics when she was just 12. In college, she studied Reiki and various metaphysical topics in solitude before graduating and moving from central Wisconsin to Twin Cities, Minnesota. It was there she found teachers, completed a three-year healing and energy healing program, and studied massage, Reiki, intuitive ability, and other paranormal topics. Wix put her learning to use by doing massage and energy work in various wellness centers.

Recently, Wix wrote Llewellyn’s Little Book of Unicorns.

Wix said she has been interested in unicorns for practically as long as she can remember and realized around 2007 that one can connect with them on an energetic level. She knew it was a common practice for spiritual practitioners to access spirit guides and began to experience and think about unicorns in an ethereal way.

“The first unicorn guide that I worked with I was told about by an energy healer during a massage,” Wix said. “This one has stuck with me and I would consider her one of my primary spirit guides. I’m a very visual person, a sucker for symbology, and I also love gemstones. Because of these things, she presented to me with wings bedazzled with crystals, that would change according to whatever mood or message she had for me. It was really beautiful imagery.”

In the book, Wix breaks down the way we think about and interact with unicorns into four categories:

1. Unicorns as an Extinct or Hidden Cryptozoological Creature

“Unicorns have been in our consciousness for thousands of years,” Wix said. “An animal known as the Siberian Unicorn existed during the Ice Age and was still around at the same time that modern humans were emerging. In modern times, “unicorns” have been found or created with goats, sheep, and deer. These have occurred from loss of a horn, genetic anomaly, or in some cases, the forced growth and intertwining of two horns into one. Most recently a sheep with the appearance of a unicorn was saved in Australia in 2019.”

2. Unicorns Envisioned Through the Use of Imagination

This is as simple as it sounds. In pop culture, this occurs when unicorns are used in cartoons and fantasy franchises. For a spiritual use of imagination, you can imagine a unicorn in terms of creative visualization, creating a mental image of a unicorn and meditating on it.

“You can [also] ask the unicorn to present itself, allowing whatever you envision to unfold without consciously trying to see it in a certain way,” Wix said. “So it can be an active or passive way of using your imagination.”

3. Unicorns As a Metaphor for the Search For Magic in Life and the Inner Magic of Being Your Authentic Self

“I think that’s part of why they have exploded in pop culture,” Wix said in reference to unicorns as a metaphor. “People are trying to come back to themselves and be empowered because life is chaotic and scary and our world is so stressful. I think that metaphor is so powerful for people right now.”

4. Unicorns As Spirit Guides

In the book, Wix discusses subtle ways that unicorn energy nudges us.

“Some ways that unicorn energy tries to get our attention include through reflection like synchronicities, imagination, beauty, dreams, our passions and personal quirks, and the unicorn people in our lives,” Wix said. “They are the [ones] that raise our energy and lift us up.”

Wix explained that spiritual work with unicorns is often focused on mindfulness, playfulness, finding beauty in your environment, the power of imagination, and reconnecting to your authentic self.

Wix gave advice on how to connect with unicorn spirit guides, which is detailed more thoroughly in her book.

“A good place to start is with meditation,” Wix said. “Set an intention beforehand that you’ll meet your unicorn guide. Go into your meditation and find yourself in a calm space. When you feel centered and quiet, envision a door that you open or see your guide coming to you from the edge of the space you’re in. From there you can interact, ask questions, and allow messages to unfold.”

Wix said that it’s not difficult to connect with unicorn guides. It is, like meditation and visualization, like calling on angels and spirit guides, a practice anyone can use to heal.

“In the past my spiritual practice was … off-and-on in the same way that you might be off-and-on with a therapy or supplement treatment that helps you,” Wix said. “I leaned on it much more when I was in low points, and sort of forgot about it when I was feeling good. I think that’s pretty typical for a lot of people. Now my spiritual practice is more consistent, so the tools and energies that I work with are more steadily in my awareness.”
