Coldwater, Michigan – Old Sam

In south-central Michigan is a Victorian town surrounded by hundreds of lakes, called Coldwater. One of their most famous residences is Old Sam, a hero of the Civil War. Sam isn’t your ordinary war hero. Sam is a horse. At twelve years of age Sam was drafted into the war after rigorous training at Fort Wayne in Detroit Michigan. He was then put into the bloodiest of battles, the only survivor out of 200 in his battery and was given a hero’s welcome. When he died the town wanted to give him a hero’s burial, but it was illegal to bury an animal in a cemetery. So in the dead of night they buried Sam in an unmarked grave. Today you can visit his grave, and you might even hear the clip clop of his hooves going up and down the streets of Coldwater.
