On Wednesday, federal agents raided Muslim organizations and homes in Virginia and Georgia, bearing search warrants looking for evidence of funding terrorist organizations. Ironically, one of the targets of the raids was the Graduate School of Islamic and Social Sciences, an institution headed by Shaikh Dr. Taha Jaber al-Alawani (his home was searched as well), who delivered a fatwa in October 2001 sanctioning American Muslim soldiers to participate in the “War on Terrorism” on Islamic religious grounds and thanked the US government in the latest issue of the Journal of Law and Religion for honoring the Prophet Muhammad (saw) in a controversial frieze at the US Supreme Court building. The school is also approved by the Pentagon for training Muslim chaplains. Making “anti-terror” raids on some of the most liberal and open American Muslim organizations – known for strong stands against extremism – makes it harder for the US to say that this isn’t a war against Islam.
