: Hey, Hey! Ho, Ho! Protests Help Muslims Assimilate May 1, 2002

Although many Muslims in America have been reluctant to even identify themselves since 9/11, many others have been finding the courage to join others in protests across the country. The sight of veiled women marching recently next to anti-globalization activists (and – gasp – Queers Undermining Israeli Terrorism) has been quite a sight to see. In addition to helping others know Muslims at a personal level, these combined actions have helped Muslims identify with new causes, and recognize the links between them. For example, the Japanese community, with memories of internment during World War II, has gone out of its way to bring attention to unlawful detainment and secret evidence used against Arabs and others. And in return, Muslims have come out in numbers to support the Japanese community.
