The Muaddhin
Of all of the things that I am and all of the things that I do — travel, speaking, writing and adventuring — core to my sole is the persona of a Muaddhin. Before an evening event where I was to speak, Hafidh Fayaz Nawabi of San Diego, California took me for a brief distraction/excursion to the cliffs of Torrey Pines State Natural Reserve to walk a breath taking trail to the edge of the world. There, I climbed a cliff overlooking the sea and raised the adhan so that my words would carry across the winds, touching everything in the park and beyond. As I stood there high on top of everything, nostalgia hit me reminding me of the Muaddhins of old. We know that this was the habit of the blessed companions (May Allah ﷻ be pleased with them), to raise the call in forests, mountain tops, open spaces and barren lands, competing with one another to amplify their voices against time and space. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said: “Anything touched by the voice of a Muaddhin while making the adhan, animate or inanimate would become his witness on the day of judgment …”
