The Call of Duty

On November 9th, 2003, my late father Dr. Salam A. Syed aged 63, went to the Tawheed Center of Farmington Hills, Michigan for tarawih prayers. After praying the congregational prayer (Isha), he prayed the Sunnah (Prophetic) prayer. During his second sajdah (prostration) in his second rakat (repetition in the cycle of prayer), while saying: “Glory be to my Lord, the highest of the high,” he breathed his last breath. It is said by the Prophet ﷺ that “When a person passes away, three things aid them in the form of an on-going charity: 1. A righteous child who sincerely prays for them/does good deeds on their behalf. 2. A beneficial knowledge that they had in stimulating/sharing with others 3. Work associated with building/running of the mosque.” Year after year when Ramadan comes, my spirits rise and my vision gets focused. Sitting in the first saf (line) in the masjid of the Tawheed Center I meditate on the matter of dropping exponential assets into my father’s account while I prepare to intensify my deeds/worship in the greatest month of the year.
