“Sadly, it has been especially challenging as an American Muslim – and as a woman to safely navigate through a political climate that has systematically fed into a myopic and dangerous narrative that somehow it is acceptable –even encouraged to trivialize sexual assault, and applaud the re-victimization of survivors. That somehow common decency and human empathy can be replaced with juvenile mockery and internalized misogyny without reproach or consequence.

It is also worth noting that a photo such as this particular one brazenly celebrates and encourages violence against women and embodies everything that is wrong with this conversation. The ramifications from such open hostility, scorn, and ridicule are yet to manifest; however, one cannot begin to overstate how vitally critical it is for our country to stop making excuses for this criminal behavior and aggressively dismantle the mindset that aims to normalize rape culture, pimp ignorance and bastardize victims.”
