Chicago-area youths have made a striking public service announcement for local TV in response to anti-immigrant sentiment they saw surge after the Sept. 11 attacks. In the video, a young Muslim woman wearing a hijab, or head scarf, maneuvers down a school stairway as young men taunt her. “Go home!” one of them shouts. After flashing a series of words (“illegal,” “unpatriotic,” “terrorist,” “un-American”), the video ends with the message, “Don’t let hate divide us.” With the backing of community groups, they plan to show the videos in classrooms throughout the city and suburbs.
