For a while, it seemed like the retro trend would pass Yusuf Islam (aka Cat Stevens) by, but over the past years the former reclusive Muslim activist and educator has emerged from the obscurity that followed the whole Salman Rushdie affair. First, it was the licensing of his song “The Wind” for a Timberland commercial (wonder if he regrets that after Timberland CEO Jeffrey Schwartz’s comments about the Palestinians). Then a critically acclaimed VH-1 documentary last year put him back in the spotlight. Now, Islam’s “Peace Train” could soon be rolling to Broadway, as he visited New York last week to examine possibilities (and court investors) to make the story of his life a Broadway show. The play will reportedly feature many Cat Stevens hits, although it remains to be seen whether Islam will perform them. (We wish he would.)
