The Newest Trend in Kids Birthday Parties Could Change the World for the BETTER

According to a recent Yahoo! article, a fiver party “…suggests that parents of guests at the party bring $5 to be put towards a bigger gift for the child-of-honour’s birthday. Instead of imposing big price tags on gifts for birthday parties, ‘fiver parties’ keep the cost low for guests and still contribute to the celebration at large.”

Seems like a really great idea, right?  However, there are a couple of potential drawbacks:

  1.  It’s a bit awkward to ask for a specific gift or donation on the birthday invitation.
  2. Some friends and family members really love the process of going out and picking out the perfect gift for the birthday boy/girl and will be disappointed with this approach.

With that said, I still think fiver parties are a great new trend that could change our world for the better.  Kids LOVE getting toys, but when you have a lot of birthday guests–not to mention grandparents and other family members who purchase multiple gifts–the birthday boy/girl can become overwhelmed and unable to fully appreciate all of the gifts.

According to the article, a fiver party is a great alternative to traditional parties and gifts because, “…asking guests for a small amount of money instead of a gift also opens up new experiences for your child. While some of the money can go towards a new toy or gadget, parents can also help their child donate to a charity of his choice, or invest the money in her future.”

Now, THAT’s a amazing!  I think party attendees would be more excited to bring $5 knowing that they are not only giving towards a certain birthday gift for the child, but they are also giving to a specific charity that means something to the family.  That’s a win-win, and it will hopefully instill the gift of giving within the hearts of our kids and help them to make a difference in the lives of others in a tangible way.  And, that is truly one of the best gifts they will ever receive.

So, what do you think?  Would you do this?  Let us know what you think and how you might do this for your own kids.
