Hijab is for Muslims only

Have you ever seen the image of Virgin Mary without wearing a hijab?

OK, I know you never think of it as hijab, but how is that image different than many of the hijabi Muslim women wearing ‘hijab’?

And how about the hijab of the Christian nuns? Why would it not be considered ‘hijab’? Their bodies are well covered, not just their heads. Moreover, the Christian nuns are expected to behave in a modest manner, once again highlighting the fact that hijab is more than just the head covering or a physical dress code.

Many women in the Old testaments are known to have been wearing hijab, or head coverings or veils.

Isaac went out to meditate in the field toward evening; and he lifted up his eyes and looked, and behold, camels were coming. Rebekah lifted up her eyes, and when she saw Isaac she dismounted from the camel. She said to the servant, “Who is that man walking in the field to meet us?” And the servant said, “He is my master.” Then she took her veil and covered herself. Genesis 24:63–65

Paul emphasized modesty and head coverings in many of his letters and writings.

And I want women to be modest in their appearance. They should wear decent and appropriate clothing and not draw attention to themselves by the way they fix their hair or by wearing gold or pearls or expensive clothes. For women who claim to be devoted to God should make themselves attractive by the good things they do. 1 Timothy 2:9–10

And chapter 11 of 1 Corinthians deals primarily with head covering-for men and women, at least while praying.

For this reason, and because the angels are watching, a woman should wear a covering on her head to show she is under authority. 1 Corinthians 11:10

Lowering the gaze has been referred to as hijab of the eyes in order to protect from indecency. The concept in the Qur’an’s verses 24:30 and 31 noted above,  is actually not too dissimilar to the teachings of Jesus.

You have heard the commandment that says, ‘You must not commit adultery.’ But I say, anyone who even looks at a woman with lust has already committed adultery with her in his heart. Matthew 5:27-28
