principled pragmatism

principled pragmatism 2012-05-09T19:11:38-06:00

Hello, Patheos community!

This is exciting 🙂 I’m grateful for the opportunity and the invitation to blog here at Patheos’ Faith and Politics channel and figured I’d start things out with a “Hello, World”. My aim here is to blog about politics rather than religion, though I approach the topic from my religious perspective, as an orthodox muslim and a social liberal. Reconciling these identities into a coherent narrative is a challenge, but I’ve been blogging for long enough that I think I’ve got the hang of it by now! I call my approach “principled pragmatism” because I think that in politics, unlike faith, any actual progress in terms of meaningful policy depends on the art of compromise. So, I temper my principles with pragmatism rather than the other way around.

I’ll get started with some real content tomorrow but this short post should suffice as an introduction to my general philosophy. I am looking forward to some good conversation!
