THE QUEEN OF KATWE
A former professional hockey player turned producer named Troy Buder discovered the true-life story Phiona Mutesi, a young girl from the slums of Katwe, Uganda, who meandered one day into a Christian chess camp run by a missionary group called the Sports Outreach Institute. Phiona discovered she had a knack for the game, and ultimately went on to become a world chess champion. Her story is both heartbreaking and heartwarming in a wonderful a movie about hope, the enduring love of a mother, and never giving up on your dreams.
If that’s not enough (because you have no heart), the film features faithful favorite David Oyelowo (SELMA, INTERSTELLAR) as well as another A-lister, the highly regarded Lupita Nyong’o (STAR WARS, THE JUNGLE BOOK).
