The Secret To Living a Joyful Life

How’s your day going so far? Typically, your answer to that question will depend on the current circumstances in your life. I’ll be the first to admit that not all of my days are created equal. Sometimes, it varies from hour to hour. When I wake up in the morning, I have no idea what challenges I’ll face. And, if I’m not careful, my mood can end up resembling a yo-yo on a string. When this happens, my happiness is dependent on good things happening in my life. Guess how long that’s going to last?

In his letter to the Colossians, St. Paul gives us the secret of perpetual joy. His advice is simple and to the point, but it’s rarely practiced:

Think of what is above, not of what is on earth. (Colossians 3:2)

Thinking of what is above is not denying reality. Just the opposite! Instead of dwelling on your problems, Paul encourages us to think of spiritual realities. You have an all-powerful Father in heaven who loves you unconditionally. Sure, you still need to do what you can to address your problems, but make sure you never lose sight of the reality of God’s love and power. Doing it on a regular basis will bring you great joy, even in the midst of difficulties.

Let’s pray…

Abba Father, All things are possible for you. You created the entire universe out of nothing and I know you can handle whatever is burdening me today. Jesus told me to ask and I will receive. Therefore, I ask you to help me with my current challenges. I place my problems in your powerful and loving hands. Thank you, Father. I know that you hear me whenever I call to you. I also know that you will answer in the best way possible, when the time is right. I ask this in the powerful and holy name of Jesus Christ. Amen!
