Pop’s Lessons– Part Twenty Six

7/24/77— Genesis 1— God and Space

The Bible tells me that in the beginning, God created heaven and earth, and he created all things. The Psalmist said the heavens are telling the glory of God.  So, God has been in the space business for a very long time.  According to Paul, it is God’s Son Jesus Christ who maintains the celestial bodies in their courses. The moon has been glorifying its creator for all time, simply by being the moon, and by rotating around the earth, moving the tides that give us life as we know it.  God gave human beings dominion over the material world.  But why?

The whole secret of the universe is tied to the cross. God in his infinite wisdom has tied to the cross the whole purpose of human existence. Through the cross we understand where we came from, why we are here, where we are going, and what life is all about.  What are your resources, where do you draw your strength from, what is your hope?  The Bible tells us that God loves us. This is not sentimental gush, nor theological theory. It is documented fact. It is a fact that God sent his Son into the world. It is a fact that God’s Son died on a cross for our sins and that there is forgiveness at the foot of the cross. It is a fact that all this happened because God loves us.

King David was once hounded by guilt, crippled by resentment, and paralyzed by fear, a great life sidetracked.  But David was not willing to accept purposelessness or defeat. He had had a glimpse of the mountain top and he would never be content to live in the valley of despair.  He was a man of action and we all need that action today. So he took his case to God. How many of us get alone with God in the privacy of our room and meditate only on God, as David did. Some of us always find every kind of thing to do other than be alone with the Savior.  David had found God, and in finding him had also found himself.  When your heart is set aglow with the love of God and with a sense of his presence, you will have the fire of a holy purpose burning within you. To live life at the highest level there has to be a fire of self-recognition– we must face up to the truth about  ourselves and about Christ.
