The Incredible Tombs of Philip of Macedon and Family– Part Five

The Incredible Tombs of Philip of Macedon and Family– Part Five July 15, 2023

One of the interesting contrasts one can note is between the rough hewn construction of the tombs themselves, and the high art craftsmanship of what is in the tombs.    Here is a peek at the tomb construction….

Of course the construction of such tombs involved slave labor, contrasted to the artisan work done by free persons…. Here is some of the remarkable ivory work that was part of an ivory couch for the queen….

The queen was wrapped in a gorgeous yellow and purple textile wrap….

There are also gold medallions and a remarkable necklace of sorts…

There were also small clay figures and figurines….

This museum is simply overwhelming, and I would strongly recommend the guide book by Angeliki Kottaridi, A tour through the Museum of the Royal Tombs of Aigai (yet another name for Vergina or Veria).  In our last post we will deal with some of the grave steles.
