Before the age of the auto, carriages were all the rage in the East and South. And some companies made a fortune off of designing various kinds, often modelled on British carriages, including royal ones…. so not surprisingly, since rich Americans like to imitate British royalty… we find the Victoria— modelled on Queen Victoria’s own fancy carriage….
My personal favorite is the pie wagon!
Some of these buggies were fancy enough to have brakes….
In the winter one wanted a sleigh, even though the middle of Tennessee didn’t get much snow….
And sleighs came in small as well as large sizes
There were carriages with roof racks for luggage if one was travelling distances…
There were smaller carriages for a couple to take an afternoon ride through the country or into the nearby village…
And there were places for children to play in the carriage house…..
Yes this is what children used to do before cell phones and video games. Actually play outside the house, and even get exercise and use their imaginations….. and have various pretend games.
