A Sign outside a house I saw in Lexington yesterday. There are so many things wrong with this sign: 1) If you dealing with a criminal who is not right with Jesus, a threat with a gun is not going to fix that. You are more likely to be sending him straight to Hell, and do you want that on your conscience?; 2) this is totally incompatible with love your enemies, pray for those who persecute you, turn the other cheek, if someone takes your cloak from you offer your tunic as well, and so on. 3) if you’re dealing with a thief, he’s coming to steal something. Your possessions are not more important than your life, and in particular living a Christian life. Trying to protect your possessions while sending someone into the afterlife seems to be a clear violation of ‘you cannot serve both God and mammon’. 4) of course stealing is a sin, but murder is a more serious sin. Are you really prepared to commit a mortal sin in order to prevent a less serious sin? I could go on. Next time, Lexington neighbor, read through the Sermon on the Mount before posting this sign in your front yard.
