This week I wrote an Article for Theologues talking about the “Seven Reasons I believe in the Trinity.” I hope you will take a look! Here is an excerpt: I believe in the Bible. I find it is a beautiful book and when rightly divided it is a reliable rule for what I believe and how I behave. However there are a great deal of things I believe in which are not explicitly mentioned in the scriptures. Chief among these... Read more

As I have written about before, I love to spend my free time listening to lectures and podcast about religion, theology and the Bible. I thought I would let you all know that Yale has recently posted a fascinating series of lectures on the Old Testament. I have been really enjoying the course so far. There are 24 classes, and each one is 45 minutes long. I thought I would share one video. They are taught by Dr. Christine Hayes, author... Read more

Last week  the Obama Administration unveiled the Third U.S. National Climate Assessment (NCA)—the “most comprehensive, authoritative scientific report ever generated about climate changes that are happening now in the United States and further changes that we can expect to see throughout this century.” What is shows is the need for urgent action to combat the threats from climate change. Of course there have been some who have expressed some skepticism, to which John Oliver responded with hilarity and vulgarity.  In a nutshell this latest report is... Read more

I love The Lord of the Rings. I love the mythology, the lore, the songs, the poetry, the drama, the characters, the world, the races, the battles, the romance, the themes, and the style. There are few things I love more than reading through a chapter of the story. LOTR is one of those books that I can open to any page and enjoy because I know the story so well. I have read through the book numerous times. I... Read more

A couple weeks ago the Gospel reading recounted one of my favorite stories of Jesus. It is the story of his walk down the road to Emmaus with two of his followers after the resurrection. They don’t recognize him at first, for his identity is hidden. As they walk Jesus opens up the scriptures, showing all the ways that the law and the prophets lay a foundation for the cross and the empty tomb. Finally, after a day of walking... Read more

There has been a lot of discussion about the movie Noah’s portrayal of the Biblical account. I personally came out in favor of the movie‘s interpretation. One of the most controversial scene’s was Noah’s retelling of the book of Genesis up until the flood. In my opinion it is was of the best parts of the movie. It’s a poetic weaving of the narrative through the mythos of the ancient world alongside the scientific worldview that we bring into the... Read more

This weekend I had the great pleasure of sitting down with author, pastor, and musician Glenn Packiam. He is working on bringing the liturgy into the life of one of the nations largest mega-churches New Life Church in Colorado Springs. He is also working on getting ordained in the Anglican church. I found this to be a fascinating move. More an more it seems evangelicals are embracing liturgical worship, and I couldn’t be happier about it. Take a listen. If you... Read more

The premiere of the new arrangement of Lazarus: The Musical, was one of the highlights of Bread for the World’s 2013 National Gathering. Bread for the World is putting on another performance of it in a few weeks here in Washington D.C. in honor of my good friend Bishop Don Williams. If you’re not failure with it, it tells an inspiring story of judgment and redemption, hunger and hope that retells Jesus’ parable about the hungry man at the rich man’s door in Luke 16th.  I would... Read more

Theologues: Roundtable Over the weekend a project that I have been involved with just launched. Its a webpage called “Theologues.” The goal of the page is to help bring the rich theological tradition of historic Christianity to new people, and to offer a  place for those that are seeking a connection to a deeper faith to be fed by the riches of Christian theology, liturgy, and history. I am very excited about this project! As part of the project we... Read more

I am excited that Patheos is turning five. As I’ve written about, on more than one occasion, I think Patheos is one of the best places on the internet for theological discussions and exploration of faith. I have still very honored to be a part of the family here. As bloggers here, we have all been taking this time to think back on the past 5 years and to think about what some of the best posts we... Read more
