A year after our fruitful (haha) blog discussion on “Natural Family Planning” and Method Effectiveness, I can report 14 months of successful pregnancy-spacing, while nursing, with the ultimate Catholic fertility tracking method: the C-T-M-L method. C is for “Creighton”. I have come to realize that the Creighton model is synonymous with living a white marriage, but it’s actually really effective to pay a Creighton instructor $40/hour to be sure that you are… still… abstaining. T is for “temperature”, or “thermal”... Read more

I am running on fumes here, so forgive me if this makes very little sense 🙂 First, on the tensions.  The big thing that I wonder about is whether we should be appalled or concerned that this is pretty much a conversation had by women.  Any caring father has these tensions, as well.  Among the builder husbands, some lean in to their careers more and miss out on some family time, while others have changed their careers in order to... Read more

Hydrangeas are my all-time favorite flower, but until now I have been sorely disappointed every time I have attempted to bring them into my home. Within 24 hours of placing them in a vase, they have completely wilted and I have thrown them into the trash, thinking that there was no hope! Two weeks ago, however, my husband brought home three stems of light blue hydrangeas for me, and this time I was determined to make them last! Sadly, two... Read more

I apologize in advance for having two posts in a row about feeding a baby, but it is an important topic in my life right now! I’m sure one of the Builders has written about this at some point and I missed it when I was a reader (maybe not?), but I’m looking for some feeding advice. As I wrote here I am still nursing (hooray!) and will continue doing so hopefully for several more months. Even so, we have... Read more

… and Professor Elizabeth Corey has finally laid out the tradeoff in a beautiful, thought-provoking manner I appreciate. Please stop reading me with your free time and read this, it has given me food for thought and fodder for argument for nearly a week now. I simply cannot stop thinking about the way in which Prof. Corey frames the debate of working v. stay-at-home-mothering. Essentially, Professor Corey writes that there are two competing desires within modern women: a)the desire to... Read more

My four and a half year old son, E, loves Legos.  Each day, he looks forward to his afternoon rest time away from his younger siblings, because it is then that he gets his Lego box, sprawls out on the floor, and sets to work on his newest creation. I am rather amazed that my son loves Legos, because he is easily frustrated.  Partly due to his temperament and partly due to his young age, my son’s first and almost... Read more

MaryAlice mentioned in her Fall Morning Magic post that she sometimes used packets of oatmeal in the morning. Ditto here. I have also been guiltily buying them since August so that I would not have to get up  a few minutes earlier (also not a morning person) to make oatmeal and deal with the pot boiling over while I try to ensure that schoolbound kids are ready for school and others are ready for homeschool. They are so easy and... Read more

It seems hard to menu plan because we are still having some 80 degree days, but as much as I love being cold and cozy I have found that these two recipes are allowing me to compromise with the season.  This chili is lighter than a usual beef version and uses lots of fresh farmer’s market produce.  I even used fresh tomatoes instead of canned.  The apple crisp, made with apples we picked ourselves, can be served with ice cream... Read more

Two children mill around our kitchen fetching bowls, spoons, pouring cereal.  I grab the milk and divvy it out to each. One little lady saunters in from upstairs, dressed in a princess nightgown and gazing around in morning awe.  Another little lady sits, pajama-clad, and shouts orders from her lofty highchair.  She’s been here since the kitchen opened and is already on bowl #2 of breakfast. I have been up since 5am and have added 6 miles and a grocery... Read more
