CBB Review: Becoming a Catholic Family May 18, 2015

becoming_a_catholic_family_croppedBeyond books there are also a number of other resources available to Catholics to strengthen their faith. Recently St. Joseph Communications has entered into a partnership with Lighthouse Catholic Media. This is a win – win for both as St. Joseph Communications has an amazing catalog of audio and video resources among other things and Lighthouse has a fantastic distribution model. This is also a win – win for us as we will have yet another outlet of faith building material. This will be my first of many reviews from St. Joseph Communications’ product line. I encourage you to visit their website at http://saintjoe.net/

This week I am featuring the St. Joseph Communication’s 4-CD set Becoming a Catholic Family by Dr. Scott and Kimberly Hahn. From the back of the package: “Scott and Kimberly Hahn share the triumphs and difficulties they encountered attempting to build a Catholic family. Like you, they had to discern how to balance faith with the realities of marriage work, educating kids, and more. In this informative and inspirational presentation you’ll gain practical knowledge and a truly Catholic theological perspective on marriage as an indissoluble, life-giving gift. An inspirational series for Catholic couples based on the words of Scripture and the teachings of the Church.”

Each of the CDs in the set contains a separate talk. In the first CD Kimberly discusses her conversion. Many know about Scott’s from his highly distributed tapes on his conversion story. Kimberly talks about how Scott’s conversion impacted her own faith journey and it’s a talk that holds just as much weight as Scott’s conversion. In the second CD Scott discusses many family issues including birth control and the impact that held on their marriage early on. CD 3 is a Question and Answer session with both Scott and Kimberly that covers a wide variety of family issues. The final CD is a “tag team” talk of sorts with both Scott and Kimberly switching off as they again discuss various issues that affected their family life.

There was one common theme throughout the set that kept popping up. That was their individual conversions. With Scott converting first we are told by both himself and Kimberly, how lonely he felt. Kimberly describes her feelings of betrayal at the same time. Like most couples the Hahn’s had some long-range plans that basically were turned upside down with Scott’s conversion. However, by the grace of God, they saw through this struggle and their marriage strengthened.

I found Becoming a Catholic Family to be a great set of CDs that shows that we all have struggles when it comes to family life. It was refreshing to hear one of the most well-known Catholic couples, Scott and Kimberly Hahn, openly discussing their own. These four talks will certainly be fruitful for any married couple.
