CBB Media Review – Christian Fatherhood: Dad-ness with Gladness

It’s pretty unlikely that you have never heard one of Scott Hahn’s talks on tape or CD. His topics of discussion run the gambit of topics from angels to the Eucharist to deep studies of individual books of the Bible. Recently I stumbled upon a set from St. Joseph Communications that was a topic I had never heard Scott speak on before. Christian Fatherhood: Dad-ness with Gladness is a 2-disc set that is a great look into the role of fatherhood today through the eyes of scripture and sprinkled with Scott’s own experiences.

John Paul II has stated that our civilization passes through the family. The family is the created of image of the blessed Trinity. The family is a domestic Church. Parents are called and anointed to be priests, prophets and kings. Marriage is a covenant made with God, a vocation called to holiness a sacrament of the love bound between Jesus Christ and the Church. These are just a few of the points Scott details. He then provides practical advice on how to these into practice in our own homes.

Scott tailors this talk to dads but as he says “women and single people will also find a lot that applies to them as well.” Scott poses some thought provoking questions to dads today. “When was the last time you hugged your wife in front of your kids? When was the last time you pronounced a blessing over your children or asked God to bless your wife? When was the last time you used holy water in your house with your kids or sprinkled their rooms or made the sign of the cross on their doors as you went to bed? When was the last time you said a prayer to their guardian angels and asked them to help you cooperate with God in the task of raising saints? When was the last time you really got down and dirty with your kids and shared your own life experiences and the values that really mean the most to you because of what you gone through? When was the last time you wrestled with the kids on the floor? When was the last time you prayed alone with one of your kids about something he was facing and was really afraid of? When was the last time you simply admitted you were wrong and apologized to your kids?”

Scott covers these issues because they are important. The questions above are examples of the things we need to be doing and doing more of. He provides clarity and advice in making resolutions to improve family life. Dads you owe it to yourselves and your families to listen to this talk.
