Demons are weapons against the devil; Angels: Day 124 November 22, 2016

angels_augustine_1Even when the evil angels turn their strength against us, says  St. Augustine, they’re actually  weapons  in our struggle against Satan. If  we don’t despair when we run into trouble, then Satan loses,  and we’re  made stronger by the struggle.

You have made me the reproach of the foolish. You have so willed it, that I should live among those, and preach the Truth among those, who love vanity; and I can’t help being laughingstock to them. For “we have become a spectacle to the world, to angels and to men” (1 Cor. 4:9): to angels who praise us, and to men who censure us. Or rather to angels, some of whom praise, some of whom are censuring us, and to men also, some of whom are praising, and some censuring us.

Both the one and the other are weapons for us. The one is on the right hand, the other on the left, but both of them are weapons. Both of these kinds of weapons, both those on the right hand and those on the left—both those who praise, and those who censure—both those who pay us honor, and those who heap dishonor upon us—with both these kinds, I say, I fight against the devil; with both of these I strike him. I defeat him with prosperity, if I am not corrupted by it; I defeat him by adversity, if I am not broken in spirit by it. –St. Augustine, Exposition on Psalm 39, 15

IN GOD’S PRESENCE, CONSIDER . . .

What’s troubling me most right now? How can I use it as a weapon against Satan?

CLOSING PRAYER

Lord, in my journey, always  defend me from the troubles and storms stirred up by the devil.
