In this prayer, St. Ildephonsus of Spain recognizes the essential role of the Holy Spirit, both in Mary’s life and in ours.
Virgin Mary, hear my prayer!
Through the Holy Spirit,
you became the mother of Jesus.
From the Holy Spirit,
let Jesus become mine as well.
Through the Holy Spirit,
your flesh conceived Jesus.
Through the same Spirit,
let my soul receive Jesus.
Through the Holy Spirit,
you were able to know Jesus, to have him, and to bring him into the world.
Through the Holy Spirit,
Let me come to know Jesus as well. Filled with the Spirit, Mary,
you could say, “I am the handmaid of the Lord, be it done unto me according to your word.”
In the Holy Spirit, despite my lowliness,
let me speak exalted things about Jesus.
In the Spirit you now adore Jesus as Lord and contemplate him as your Son.
In the same Spirit, Mary, let me love Jesus.
—St. Ildephonsus of Spain
IN GOD’S PRESENCE, CONSIDER . . . The Holy Spirit has been called the Person of the Blessed Trinity who is most neglected by Christians. Have I considered the essential role he plays in my life and the life of the Church? Have I asked him to fill me as he filled Mary?
CLOSING PRAYER
With Mary, I pray: Come, Holy Spirit, fill the hearts of your faithful, and kindle in them the fire of your love.
