Mary, the gate of all grace Blessed Henry Suso lavishes the heavenly queen’s beauty with praise, declaring his confidence that her petitions will not be denied by the King. You, O Queen, are the gate of all grace, the door of compassion that was never yet closed. Heaven and earth will pass away before you will permit anyone who earnestly seeks your assistance to depart from you without obtaining it. Behold, for this very reason you are the one my... Read more

I first learned of Father Stanley Rother merely by chance. Mount Saint Mary’s University in Emmitsburg Maryland is a short drive away from my home. I take the 30-minute trek there annually to attend a Men’s Conference as well as to listen to some speakers they bring in. Inside Patriot Hall where the campus cafeteria is, there is a timeline filled with pictures of those who have visited or been a part of the Mount’s history. There mixed in with... Read more

God was able to preserve Mary from sin Was it too difficult for God to preserve Mary from all sin? Not at all, says St. Alphonsus; all things are possible for him. St. Thomas of Villanova says, “Nothing was ever granted to any saint that did not shine in a much higher degree in Mary from the very first moment of her existence.” And as it is true that “there is an infinite difference between the Mother of God and... Read more

It’s pretty unlikely that you have never heard one of Scott Hahn’s talks on tape or CD. His topics of discussion run the gambit of topics from angels to the Eucharist to deep studies of individual books of the Bible. Recently I stumbled upon a set from St. Joseph Communications that was a topic I had never heard Scott speak on before. Christian Fatherhood: Dad-ness with Gladness is a 2-disc set that is a great look into the role of... Read more

Mary was without even a venial sin In order to make Mary a mother worthy of her Son, St. Alphonsus observes, God preserved her even from venial sins. Given that Mary was worthy to be the Mother of God, “what excellency and what perfection was there that was not fitting for her?” asks St. Thomas of Villanova. St. Thomas Aquinas, the “Angelic Doctor” of the Church, writes: “When God chooses anyone for a particular dignity, he renders him fit for... Read more

Mary reversed the course of the ages In Mary, Blessed John Henry Newman tells us, the tradition of evil handed down from our first parents was broken, so that Light could enter the darkness. Kings of the earth, when they have sons born to them, immediately scatter some large bounty, or raise some high memorial. They honor the day, or the place, or the heralds of the auspicious event, with some corresponding mark of favor. Nor did the coming of... Read more
