I was excited when I saw Mary Eberstadt’s initial question: “Why aren’t vegetarians and pro-lifers more closely aligned?” However, the common ground she finds between animal-welfare people and pro-life people is sentimentality–or “moral intuitionism,” as she prefers to call it, which basically seems to mean that we shouldn’t kill babies and fluffy creatures because they’re cute. Call me crazy, but as a vegetarian pro-lifer, I hoped for better representation of the actual ethical principles driving both these positions–especially in First Things.
