7 Great Bible Verses About the Birth of Jesus

7 Great Bible Verses About the Birth of Jesus December 6, 2014

There are so many verses about the birth of Jesus. Really, the entire Bible – Old Testament and New – is about Jesus, because God had the plan of redemption worked out from the beginning of time.

Micah 5:2-4 (ESV) “But you, O Bethlehem Ephrathah, who are too little to be among the clans of Judah, from you shall come forth for me one who is to be ruler in Israel, whose coming forth is from of old, from ancient days. Therefore he shall give them up until the time when she who is in labor has given birth; then the rest of his brothers shall return to the people of Israel. And he shall stand and shepherd his flock in the strength of the Lord, in the majesty of the name of the Lord his God…”

This verse is an example of how God was planning for the birth of Jesus long before it happened. The plan was there, the baby was coming, and God used the Old Testament prophets to start preparing people for that glorious day.

Luke 1:31-33 (ESV) “And behold, you will conceive in your womb and bear a son, and you shall call his name Jesus. He will be great and will be called the Son of the Most High. And the Lord God will give to him the throne of his father David, and he will reign over the house of Jacob forever, and of his kingdom there will be no end.”

This is what Mary was told about Jesus, and it has been preserved for us. Even before Mary is pregnant, she knows that her child will be great and that He will rule a kingdom that will never end. What good news!

John 1:14 (ESV) “And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we have seen his glory, glory as of the only Son from the Father, full of grace and truth.”

Jesus is the Word, and He came to live among people so that we could see God’s glory. He may have been born a helpless baby just like the rest of us, but He was always full of God’s grace and truth.

Matthew 2:10-11 (ESV) “When they saw the star, they rejoiced exceedingly with great joy. And going into the house they saw the child with Mary his mother, and they fell down and worshiped him. Then, opening their treasures, they offered him gifts, gold and frankincense and myrrh.”

Whether there were three wise men or thirty, the significance of this verse is why they came. Powerful leaders from another country traveled a long and dangerous road just to give the most expensive gifts of the time to the baby of a common carpenter’s wife. That doesn’t just happen without God being involved. This verse alone is evidence that Jesus was someone special.

Isaiah 9:6-7 (ESV) “For to us a child is born, to us a son is given; and the government shall be upon his shoulder, and his name shall be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. Of the increase of his government and of peace there will be no end…”

This prophecy from the Old Testament is probably one of the most well-known verses about Jesus because of Handel’s “Messiah”—the choral piece you’ve probably heard at churches and Christmas concerts more than a few times in your life. Handel chose an important passage of scripture to set to music—a detailed description of who Jesus is and what He came to the earth to accomplish.

Luke 2:10 (ESV) “And the angel said to them, ‘Fear not, for behold, I bring you good news of great joy that will be for all the people.’”

This is one of my personal favorites. It’s so simple, and yet, like everything with God, so profound and pure. The angel tells the shepherds three things about Jesus: a) there’s nothing to be afraid of in Him, b) Jesus brings joy, and c) this good news and great joy is for everybody.

1 John 5:1 (ESV) “Everyone who believes that Jesus is the Christ has been born of God, and everyone who loves the Father loves whoever has been born of him.”

Bible Verses About The Birth of Jesus

Even though this was written after Jesus’ birth, death, and resurrection, it points to the reason behind His time on earth. This verse describes what it means to be a Christian – or Christ-follower. Jesus was born of man so that we could be born of God.

As I mentioned earlier, there are so many more verses about birth of Jesus. But my hope is that these seven verses will give you a place to start if you’re wanting memory verses for the Christmas season, or writing Christmas cards, or you just want to know more about the person of Jesus.
