Here are 7 of the top Bible verses on Armageddon or areas that are related to this place.
Defining the word Armageddon
Megiddo is a real place or real location and it’s in the Middle East, just east of present day Israel. It is located to the east of the Plains of Jezreel, which is just south of Galilee in what was originally Judea. Armageddon is really a compound word and apparently came from the Hebrew words “har Megiddo” which means “mountain of Megiddo.” Megiddo is not really a mountain but a large hill that was created ago where ancient forts were built as a defense against other nations. This could be the same place where Josiah was killed by Pharaoh Necho that is mentioned in 2nd Chronicles 35:22. When Napoleon saw this area, he said it is the perfect place to stage a battle and many Bible scholars believe that there will be another battle; a final, titanic battle between end-time forces and one that will end this present evil world’s system and which comes just prior to Jesus Christ establishing the kingdom of heaven. The word “Armageddon” is only found in one place in Scripture but the events that are thought to take place there are mentioned in several places in the Bible and those are the ones we’ll examine.
Revelations 16:15-16 “Look, I come like a thief! Blessed is the one who stays awake and remains clothed, so as not to go naked and be shamefully exposed.” Then they gathered the kings together to the place that in Hebrew is called Armageddon.”
This is the one and only place that Armageddon is mentioned by name and this battle takes place “on the great day of God Almighty” and this is really no contest because no one can fight against God and expect to win.
Isaiah 13:9 “Behold, the day of the Lord comes, cruel, with wrath and fierce anger, to make the land a desolation and to destroy its sinners from it.”
It is believed that the battle Isaiah is writing about takes place on what is called “the day of the Lord” and could well be in reference to the battle of Armageddon because the land will be made desolate and the purpose is “to destroy its sinners from it” and by the use of the word “it” this could be in reference to a place (Armageddon?) as well as a day (“on the great day of God Almighty). Even though this oracle is about Babylon, some believe that there are two Babylon’s’ the former and the latter and both will fall. There was the ancient one that fell and the one mentioned in Revelation 18:2 where it says she is “Fallen, fallen is Babylon the great!” could possibly mean the previous fall of Babylon and the fall of the one from the future. And much like ancient Babylon, this last Babylon will be the world’s dominant power.
Revelation 16:14 “For they are demonic spirits, performing signs, who go abroad to the kings of the whole world, to assemble them for battle on the great day of God the Almighty.”
This verse leads into the verses that speak of the cataclysmic battle where “they gathered the kings together to the place that in Hebrew is called Armageddon” (Rev 16:16) showing who are those inspiring this coming bloodbath. How their great wickedness and evil has so deceived their heart to even make them think that they can defeat the Omnipotent God Who only needs to speak and all resistance is crushed. That’s what pride does…it deceives a person or in this case, demonic spirits, into thinking that they have a chance at overcoming the God of the Universe.
Revelation 20:7-9 “And when the thousand years are ended Satan will be released from his prison and will come out to deceive the nations that are at the four corners of the earth, Gog and Magog, to gather them for battle; their number is like the sand of the sea. And they marched up over the broad plain of the earth and surrounded the camp of the saints and the beloved city, but fire came down from heaven and consumed them.”
This battle will be like no other battle that has ever taken place because Satan has the power to “go out to deceive the nations in the four corners of the earth–Gog and Magog–to gather them for battle. In number they are like the sand on the seashore” (Revelation 20:8) which to me is amazing since Satan, knowing the Scriptures, knows that his fate is sealed but his fierce anger and rage blinds him to the true reality of his sure defeat and doom where it is written that “the devil who had deceived them was thrown into the lake of fire and sulfur where the beast and the false prophet were, and they will be tormented day and night forever and ever” (Rev 20:10).
Joel 3:2 “I will gather all nations and bring them down to the Valley of Jehoshaphat. There I will put them on trial for what they did to my inheritance, my people Israel, because they scattered my people among the nations and divided up my land.”
Here is an Old Testament prophecy about the coming end time battle of the ages. The Valley of Jehoshaphat is believed to be the valley that lies just below Mount Megiddo. What is interesting is that the name Jehoshaphat means “the judgments of Yah (God).”
Zachariah 14:2-3 “For I will gather all the nations against Jerusalem to battle, and the city shall be taken and the houses plundered and the women raped. Half of the city shall go out into exile, but the rest of the people shall not be cut off from the city. Then the Lord will go out and fight against those nations as when he fights on a day of battle.”
Here is yet another Old Testament prophecy that reveals that it is God Who is sovereign over all the earth as He gathers “all the nations against Jerusalem to battle” but then, when all hope seems lost, “the Lord will go out and fight against those nations as when he fights on a day of battle.”
Revelation 20:9-10 “And they marched up over the broad plain of the earth and surrounded the camp of the saints and the beloved city, but fire came down from heaven and consumed them, and the devil who had deceived them was thrown into the lake of fire and sulfur where the beast and the false prophet were, and they will be tormented day and night forever and ever.”
Here is the final destination of Satan and all his evil demons. I love the saying that when the Devil reminds you of your past, remind him of his future (Rev 20:10) for his eternal destiny is sealed and nothing can prevent it from occurring for God has ordained the end.
Conclusion
The world, it appears, is spinning faster and faster, heading toward the end of the age and the sure coming rule of Christ “so that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father” (Phil 2:10).
