Top 7 Bible Verses About Finding God January 12, 2015

Here are my top 7 Bible verses on finding God. What are some of yours?

No One Seeks After God

Many who have been saved have said that “they found God” but was God really missing?  Truly “no one understands; no one seeks for God” (Rom 3:11) because “There is no one righteous, not even one” (Rom 3:10) since “All have turned away, they have together become worthless; there is no one who does good, not even one” (Rom 3:12) so why do some Scripture say that we can find God if we seek Him?

Acts 17:26-27 “And he made from one man every nation of mankind to live on all the face of the earth, having determined allotted periods and the boundaries of their dwelling place, that they should seek God, and perhaps feel their way toward him and find him. Yet he is actually not far from each one of us.”

God has placed each one of us where we are for His sovereign purposes in the hopes that we might seek after Him, not that we naturally do this because Jesus says that “No one can come to me unless the Father who sent me draws them, and I will raise them up at the last day” (John 6:44) indicating that the Father draws men and women to Himself and those He calls will come to Christ.  Like a blind man groups around in the dark, they “feel their way toward him and find him” but only those who have humbled themselves and repented of their sins.  If a person is broken over their sins, have repented of them and seeks to be forgiven through the Savior, Jesus Christ will never cast them away or turn any away who come after Him (John 6:37, 39).

Proverbs 8:17 “I love those who love me, and those who seek me diligently find me.”

It is those who love God who will seek Him and for those who are earnestly seeking Him, He will be found.  We can find God only by traveling to seek Him on our knees…for those who are humble in heart He will be found for God resists the proud but He will only give grace to the humble (James 4:6).

Deuteronomy 4:29 “But from there you will seek the Lord your God and you will find him, if you search after him with all your heart and with all your soul.”

There are conditions on finding God.  First they must be seeking Him (Duet 4:29), really knowing that He does exists (Rom 1:19-20), and doing so out of a pure heart motivated by their need for forgiveness.  God promises that those who seek Him will find Him but it must be for the right reasons.  Not just to have the forgiveness of sins but by acknowledging that they must also forsake them because “Whoever conceals his transgressions will not prosper, but he who confesses and forsakes them will obtain mercy” (Prov 28:13).  It’s one thing to say you are saved but repentance and faith are two sides of the same necessary coin.

Jeremiah 29:13 “You will seek me and find me, when you seek me with all your heart.”

Again, just as Moses wrote in Deuteronomy, Jeremiah writes that we must seek God “with all [our] heart” or He will not be found.  Those who seek after God also seek after His righteousness.  Even our prayer requests are dependent upon our pursing the righteousness of God as Christ said “seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be added to you” (Matt 6:33).  Seeking God and His kingdom means seeking to be restored to a right relationship with God that our sins have severed us from God (Isaiah 59:1-2). God says “Call to me and I will answer you, and will tell you great and hidden things that you have not known” (Jer 33:3).

Hebrews 11:6 “And without faith it is impossible to please him, for whoever would draw near to God must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who seek him.”

The paradox of seeking and finding God is that we must have faith that He exists and that He rewards “those who seek him.”  The paradox is that as Jesus says “You did not choose me, but I chose you and appointed you that you should go and bear fruit and that your fruit should abide, so that whatever you ask the Father in my name, he may give it to you” (John 15:16) so who does the choosing exactly?  God does (Eph 1) but we must have faith that He exists and if we do, He will reward those by His being able to be found.

John 4:23 “But the hour is coming, and is now here, when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth, for the Father is seeking such people to worship him.”

What “hour” is Jesus speaking about?  It was after His resurrection and His building His church because today, the universal church worships God in places all over the world.  This is what is known as the Body of Christ, the church.  God “the Father is seeking such people to worship him” and if you have been born again (John 3:3, 5) then you are one of those whom He is seeking.  Have you been found?  Are you still lost?  Then get found!

Job 11:7 “Can you find out the deep things of God? Can you find out the limit of the Almighty?”

Bible Verses About Finding God

No one can ever search out the deep things of God because the finite mind (ours) can never fathom the depths of the infinite mind (God’s) but we can find God in His Word, the Bible. God is the Word and the Word is God (John 1) and they cannot be separated.  When you find the Word of God you can find God because He is written in the pages of the Bible for us to know.  When we seek to find God, we must open His Word for there He is!

Conclusion

As we have read, no one can find God without a humble, contrite, and broken spirit for God has regard for those who are emptied of themselves and then fills them with His Spirit.  God cannot fix what is first not broken and it is my prayer that everyone who reads this will be broken over their sin and confess them to God and then repent or forsake them, by turning away from sin and turning to Christ as your Savior.  Then you can be born again and then have your name written in the book of life and be spared from the judgment of God on that day when He returns to judge the world in righteousness (Rev 20:12-15). Then I will seek you in the kingdom and find you and just like the prodigal son’s father said, God will say, “For this my son (or daughter) was dead, and is alive again; he (or she) was lost, and is found.’ And they began to celebrate” (Luke 15:24) and what a day of celebration that will be for we will finally not have to seek after God anymore but He will be found because we were saved and then we can actually see the face of God.
