When I worked in a residential facility for people with HIV/AIDS in Texas, I’ll admit I developed a little bit of a grudge against the “historically black” Christian church. Though I adored the more expressive gospel worship style and embraced liberation theology as truly central to Jesus “good news,” there was an undercurrent of intolerance that was a true killer. In my years at that facility, the incidence of heterosexual African-American married women coming to us for help increased dramatically.... Read more

I’m coming to terms with the realization that I’m a big, fat fake. But at least I’m in good company. Amy’s birthday was last Sunday. We had just arrived in Portland, so we went to a fancy-pants restaurant, situated several hundred feet above the skyline, with a view of the entire surrounding city, the Willamette River and Mount Hood. We shared a bottle of wine, enjoyed outstanding service and indulged on gourmet food to celebrate her ever-growing tenure as an... Read more

One of the holiest moments on our weeks-long journey from Colorado to Portland was when we stopped off in the Redwood National Forest. It’s really hard to explain what is so sacred about that space if you haven’t been there; I can only hope that the photos communicate at least a little bit of the moment. Read more

Yes, kids, it’s that time again already. Seems it was only seven days ago when we posted our last batch of weekly church sign epic fails, and here we are again. So let’s get to it: your weekly infusion of bad church signs. (Oh, and if you’ve missed previous posts, links to all are at the bottom of this post.) I spent a few minutes in the hot seat with Patheos editor Deb Arca who asked me quite possibly the most challenging, soul-searching questions of my entire life. And then when the tape recorder broke, we went with these instead. Enjoy. ***** Christian Piatt’s newest book, PregMANcy: A Dad, A LIttle Dude, and a Due Date, is one of those you just can’t put down.  I mean, how often do you get to hear a guy’s innermost, unedited thoughts from... Read more

We finally made it to the Oregon Coast yesterday. I took some pictures in the redwood forest that I’ll share soon, but this post isn’t about that. We got in before dinner and were happy to learn that we had a hotel room with an ocean view. Not only that, but it actually is right on the beach. So of course, we decided to sleep with the windows open. It’s one thing to fall asleep to the nature sounds on... Read more

I’ve become a serious blog slacker, at least by my typical standards. My regular discipline is to post daily, but I’ve actually had to make a conscious effort NOT to keep up that pace while on our trip. And believe it or not, the world hasn’t come to an end without a daily post from me. Hard for a narcissist like me to grasp, but it’s true. The world can keep spinning on its axis without my input. I’ve decided... Read more

I’m actually kind of surprised and a little bit proud of myself that I didn’t blog over the weekend. I kind of figured after posting about getting off our hectic schedules to reconnect with our bodies, it would be pretty hypocritical if I didn’t at least try to do the same thing. Granted, I did post my dumb church signs yesterday, but that doesn’t exactly count. We’ve been in San Francisco the last couple of days, which is one of... Read more
