For a day or so I read several stories about this.  I saw it on TV news as well.  The typical ‘Ha! Told you women are more awesome than men!’  But without the coverage spending much time on the study itself, I still had my doubts.  Mike Flynn confirms what I suspected. Most studies usually aren’t worth the stamps needed to mail them.  One, the researchers can easily manipulate the study.  Two, if they don’t, but don’t like the results, they... Read more

Alan Colmes has died.  Alan was part of Hannity and Colmes, an early breakout show on the fledgling FOX News network.  FOX emerged in the mid 90s, when even Democrats I knew were a little worried the press wasn’t being on the up and up.  The idea of a press not being honest, even if it was beneficial for a time, wasn’t appealing to people.  Back then at least. FOX seemed, at the time, to provide an alternative.  Often having... Read more

You would have been 87 today, a respectable age for any Ohio hobbit.  Unfortunately, Alzheimer’s got hold of you.  I still prefer to remember you in your younger days, where even my detractors in school looked up to you. In January, 1988, Dad had a heart attack.  He was saved by a new mediation at the time.  When I received the call, I was stunned.  I was in my third year of college.  Since he was a train engineer, we... Read more

Oh Christian Conservatives.  You’re foundering. I can’t speak for the secular brood of conservatives.  And I’ll admit, I knew little to nothing about Mr. Milo Yiannopoulos.  I will go out on a limb and say I’m against pedophilia.  And if Mr. Yiannopoulos says he really didn’t mean it, I’ll take him at his word. But here’s the thing.  At what point do Conservatives have even the slightest shard of credibility left when they defend someone who, if that person simply slipped into... Read more

And life accelerates, I’ve decided to turn off the political blogging for a season.  I came to Patheos in the middle of the strangest political campaign in my lifetime. By the time I was up and running, Trump had ceased to be the press’s reality show host darling and had become its target.  The bias was undeniable.  Some even argued that Trump necessitated a post-objective media. Because of that, and some of the resulting blind spots, especially from progressive believers, I felt... Read more

Over at The American Catholic, from posts long past.  Don’t know if the list still holds.  Personally, there are a few I would tweak but, overall, my take wouldn’t be too far from these.  Lists like this, especially in our fragmented age, are as subjective as ‘best pizza toppings.’ Still, there are a few things I look for in a list.  Attempts to put Nixon or GW Bush in the top ten will be deal breakers.  The same with Carter.  Putting... Read more

That actually has to do with Presidents’ Day, in a way.   This clip is from the right person with the right approach.   And not a bad reminder of just how blessed it is to be in a country like ours. Hence Presidents’ Day being the celebration of a small, but important, part of our heritage.   And what a heritage it is. Why she’s not a household name I can only guess.   Read more

Blogging has been and probably will be light, at least for awhile.  No one particular reason, just a string of unrelated issues.  Not bad or anything, just busy, busy, busy. So with that, in light of the latest week of the New Normal, the only thing I can think of that everyone should relate to is this little gem from one of the best musicals ever: I’ll be back when I can, including some comments and emails a long time... Read more

Young Muslims come together to help clean up a church damaged by ISIS.   This happens, and quite often.  Not just Muslims doing right, but people in general.  I remember when some radical atheist attacked and defaced a small church a couple years ago.  Atheists came together and raised money for expenses. When a Mosque was destroyed by fire, local Christian and Jewish groups came together to help.  That’s the usual.  As often as not, people will reflexively do the right... Read more

It might come as a shock, but Trump’s pick for Education Secretary was controversial.  I know.  Stop being sarcastic Dave. Anyway, in this case there were reasons for the sound and fury.  My wife, a former educator who taught in public, private and home school settings, was no fan.  In her words, she couldn’t imagine a less qualified person to be named to the position. For my part, I told her I could come up with a list.  But I... Read more
