Today’s reading, 2 Nephi 11, is very brief.  But it’s significant.

Why?

Because, in it, Nephi announces that he has seen the Savior, and that his brother Jacob and the prophet Isaiah have also seen the Savior, and he declares that the three of them stand together as witnesses.

One of the marvelous claims of the Restoration is that modern apostles and prophets (and others) have seen, and can stand as witnesses of, Jesus Christ.

Joseph Smith, Oliver Cowdery, Sidney Rigdon, Lorenzo Snow, George Q. Cannon, Joseph F. Smith — I don’t know how long the list is, but it’s considerable.

We are not relegated, simply, to sifting through ancient documents from bygone days, and left to wonder why, if God was so immediately present to people two or three millennia back, he ceased to manifest himself to mortals twenty centuries ago.
