http://www.johnmitsima.com/key-to-happiness-religion-really/   Thanks to Allen Wyatt for sharing this with me.   There are two deeply hostile and mocking, mostly aggressively atheist message boards that I look at fairly often.  (I like to know what’s agitating the people there.)   On one of them, there’s invariably a thread every Sunday wherein people list all the wonderful things they’re doing that day instead of attending church.   And they may well be giving an accurate summary of their Sundays.... Read more

My wife and I took in a showing of the latest Mission Impossible film tonight.   Good clean fun.   Lots of shooting, lots of things blowing up.  Bad guys.  Car chases.  Intrigue.  Wheels within wheels.  Clever twists.   No lasting significance, but definitely entertaining.   And, to top it off, gorgeous music from Puccini’s Turandot, which may be — I have a hard time deciding — my very favorite opera.  A big dose of it in a scene... Read more

Luke 17:22-37 Compare Matthew 24:23; 24:26-27; 24:37-39; 24:17-18; 10:39; 24:40-41; 24:8; 24:5; 16:25; Mark 13:19-23; 13:14-16; 13:5-6; 8:35; Luke 21:8; 9:24; John 12:25   Everything will just be going along normally, routinely, such that many will assume that things will continue that way forever.  And then, suddenly, when it’s too late to repent or to make preparations, the End will come.   Note:  In verse 37, the translation should probably read vultures, not eagles.  It’s vultures who circle... Read more

“From 1953 onward, Willy Fowler and I have always been intrigued by the remarkable relation of the 7.65 Mev energy level in the nucleus of Carbon 12 to the 7.12 Mev level in Oxygen 16. if you wanted to produce carbon and oxygen in roughly equal quantities by stellar nucleosynthesis, these are the two levels you have to fix, and your fixing would have to be just where these levels are actually found to be. Another put-up job?... Read more

I haven’t made up my mind about Donald Trump yet.   Perhaps, if he’ll just speak in more demagogic generalities, supply even fewer specific policy details and — most importantly — insult more people with crude, seemingly misogynistic and borderline racist remarks, I’ll endorse him.   I am, after all, reputedly a very vicious person, a racist, a homophobe, a religious bigot, and a sexist, so he ought to be right up my alley.   Weirdly, though,... Read more
