What this GOP Senator said proves they are no longer the party of limited government April 3, 2017

Donald Trump is president because America wants to rein in the federal government that grew fat and happy under the Obama administration. Republicans have promised its constituents that cutting federal spending is a major priority for the party. However, what some of them are saying proves they are no longer the party of limited government.

Speaking to Roll Call, Senate Minority Whip John Cornyn (R-TX), said, “I doubt there’d be a lot of appetite for dramatic cuts this year. I just look at it as a conversation. They’ve got their views, we’ve got our views, and we need to sit down and work that out.”

I’d say he’s dead wrong. The American people are hungry for dramatic cuts. But Cornyn isn’t interested in Trump’s proposal to cut $18 billion out of the budget. Nor is Tennessee Sen. Lamar Alexander who said he will look at the proposals, but said, “We’ll write the budget.”

Rep. Tome Cole (R-OK) also opposed the cuts, telling GQ, “You know that’s fine, but it’s a little late in the process. We’ve closed out our bills.”

Many GOP lawmakers are hesitant to cut the funding to the Corporation of Public Broadcasting, which received $445 million in federal funds last year. That’s despite the fact that both NPR and PBS rely most heavily on funds from private sources.

Does this sound like a Republican Party that is for limited government and less spending? It doesn’t to me and neither does it to the deputy director of the Thomas A. Roe Institute for Economic Policy Studies at The Heritage Foundation, Romina Boccia. She told The Daily Signal:

“For years now, Republicans have told the American people that if only they controlled both chambers of Congress and the executive, they could actually get stuff done. Now, we are seeing that those, too, were apparently empty promises.”

The GOP better get its act together. The people have spoken, and we will hold our elected leaders accountable not only for what they do, but what they don’t do.

The reality is that neither party has an appetite for reduced spending regardless of what they say publicly. We The People are not stupid.
