If you’ve spent much time in the blogosphere, you’ll agree that it’s a vast wasteland — with wonderful oasis’ of retreat scattered in the desert. Today, over at The High Calling, I featured some great writers from around the network.  It’s a joy to find places that refresh, challenge and encourage me. And maybe you, too. One of the posts really jumped out at me is called Ahem. by Nancy Franson, who blogs at Out of My Alleged Mind. My mother was a... Read more

Paratroopers On the other side of the battle front lies the territory. Once a fertile land, the people have been held hostage by the ideas of those who only wish to destroy. The people are held hostage. They are left without communication with the truth. They sit and wait, huddled in their homes, looking for Land of the lost 2a) Let God do his work so you can do yours (something about stayingfocused on doing the basics and getting out... Read more

Justin, over at businessasmissionnetwork.com The greatest “unrealized potential” in the Christian movement for the next 20 years probably rests on the shoulders of Christian business people. That’s great news for every Christian person who loves business. Talk about a life of adventure. What more could you ask for when your faith and your love for business intersect? The marketplace is the only institution that touches virtually every person on planet earth. Pastors are very limited in their direct exposure to... Read more

I just read an amazing rescue story about a three-year old girl who dialed 911 when her mother collapsed.  Her mother had been ill for a few days and eventually collapsed with no other adult on hand to assist.  The little girl had learned about the 911 system in daycare and remembered what to do. She even let paramedics in the house when they arrived. Rightly so, she’s now lauded as a hero. Last week in our bible study group, we discussed watching over... Read more

Throughout the Bible God used broken things, like bread and lanterns and alabaster flasks, but more than that, He used broken people. And He continues in this manner today, using the broken to shine His greatest light of glory & love & redemption & healing & salvation. A Simple Country Girl — Broken People Read more

I’ve been a little slow to remove the pumpkin from the porch. Why hurry? The bright orange adds color to the creeping brown of winter.  The lawn is succumbing to the cold nights. The decorative flowers are now crumpled to the ground. The days are shorter. I have to hunt out the things that cheer, since joy is not found as easily as in the carefree days of Autumn. So this festive orange sphere serves as a signpost marking an entrance to a... Read more

As the High Calling newsletter editor, I have the pleasure of reading and featuring other bloggers from around the network. It’s a great position that allows me to encourage others, and at the same time be inspired by great writing.  I recently read a couple of bloggers who took two approaches to the same topic of Creation.  Michelle Cox was ready to do battle, reading books about science and creation. She found debates and arguments and drank them up. But then it... Read more

I treasure my sight. Test me and I’ll prove it.  Throw an object at me and I’ll instinctively protect my eyes. The flinch is a built-in radar to guard our most precious organ. Although I value what I see, I take it for granted. I’m far too busy to actually look at the world around me. Speeding across the interstate, I just drive on by the “scenic overlooks,” missing out on the wonder. After all, there are places to go and... Read more

The 18th century Bible commentator, Matthew Henry was accosted one night by a robber on a dark London street He was relieved of his purse, but was left unharmed. Adrenaline pumping through his body, he sat down at his desk and breathed deep. He then penned a prayer of thanksgiving. “I thank Thee. First, because I was never robbed before Second, because altho’ they took my belongings, they did not take my life. Third, altho’ they took everything I had,... Read more

The turkey is a little slimmer this year. The trimmings are a little leaner. Thanks to trillions of dollars lost in market equity, rising unemployment and record drops in home prices, the times are signficantly tougher. The economic slump really sees no end, despite the claim of a “summer of recovery. ” It’s  been a fall, and probably a winter and beyond of continued doldrums. If you are without a job, your pain and frustration is even more evident.  On top... Read more
