Hail Mary Pass? Nuns rent out rooms at Phoenix monastery for Super Bowl, raise money for charity

You could say, it’s a different kind of Super Bowl experience. “I’ve never been in a convent or ministry where there haven’t been football fans,” said Sister Linda Campbell from the Our Lady of Guadalupe Monastery in West Phoenix.

The 66 year old nun is a self-proclaimed die hard Arizona Cardinals and NFL fanatic. “It doesn’t make any sense that Tom Brady wouldn’t have known if he felt it,” that was Campbell’s reaction when we asked about “Deflategate”.

Football isn’t the sister’s only passion, her charity work within the community comes first. Now she’s found a unique way to combine that with her love of the pigskin. After learning what home owners were doing to make some extra money, she got an idea.

“I said these people are renting their homes, do you think we could pull this off?” the sister said. This week the sisters of the monastery will rent out their eight, saintly themed guests rooms, to the football faithful.

The sisters first tried the idea for the Super Bowl in 2008 and raised $12,600. All of which went back into their charity work which includes, a community garden, thrift shop and providing anything else needy families in the area need. “I think there are people who just like a quiet atmosphere, that seemed to be the people that we drew,” she said.
