After his appearance at a Catholic university in Scranton was scrapped last weekend, the popular speaker and media personality will be coming to a secular site nearby this Saturday: Michael Voris is scheduled to speak at the Best Western Genetti Hotel and Conference Center in Wilkes-Barre at 6:30 p.m. His talk, “Living Catholicism Radically,” was canceled after the university and diocese determined that he had expressed views at odds with their values in Internet television shows he produces about Catholic... Read more

It’s a story no newspaper ever wants to report, but it happened this week in Wilmington. The Dialog, the newspaper for the Diocese of Wilmington is closing — and all staff members being laid off.  And that’s just the beginning.  More diocesan offices are also being shuttered, including some affiliated with Catholic Charities. We’re sliding into one of the busiest times for parishes, but it can be easy to forget what it’s really about. From this week’s “All Things New”: Back in the 1960s, there was a TV show called “That Was the Week That Was,” which satirized current events. It was a precursor to “Saturday Night Live” or “The Daily Show.” Well, what we are beginning Sunday will mark the ultimate “week that was.” The liturgies of this coming week are powerful... Read more

The Sisters of Life have an office in my building, and I always get a kick out of seeing them on the elevator or in the lobby or striding down the sidewalk, headed for the subway.  They’re a young order, of young women, and they radiate enthusiasm and joy. The ones I’ve encountered aren’t exactly wilting wallflowers, either.  They’re New Yorkers.  Oh: they’re warm and kind and full of charity.  But I get the distinct impression they don’t take any... Read more

Martin Sheen talks with Irish interviewer Gay Byrne about life, faith, conversion — and Charlie. You can watch the entire conversation right here.  An excerpt, below. UPDATE: LifeSiteNews has picked up this significant excerpt: Byrne asked Sheen: “The liberal causes that you espouse are readily identifiable with people in the movie business, but your anti-abortion stance is very strong indeed. And tell me what you told me on the late late show in 1987 as to why that is.” Sheen... Read more

The Bishop of Providence Rhode Island granted an interview to a local media outlet, and offered some thoughts about homosexual rights: In an exclusive interview, Roman Catholic Bishop Thomas Tobin said the Church is not opposed to granting some benefits and rights to gay couples—as long as the term marriage is not used. His statement—which was couched in caveats—nonetheless indicates a flexibility in the Church’s position that has previously been overlooked in the polarizing debate over gay marriage in Rhode... Read more

Here’s a classic Easter-time quandary. A friend writes: How terrible is it if I have little kids come over to the apartment on Good Friday and color Easter eggs? I answered: “Not terrible at all.  The color is black, right?” She wasn’t amused. Any thoughts?  What do you think? Read more

Elizabeth Scalia over at First Things sums up the season now ending, and a church riven by factions, with a meditation on today’s scripture readings: Our Lenten time in the desert has felt similarly discordant and serpent-struck. Our Christ-loving Pope—I wouldn’t want to be in his place—is beset on all sides; his curia often “helps” him into more difficulties; his faithful priests are besieged and brokenhearted, and the unfaithful ones must still be converted and, like recalcitrant sheep, coaxed back... Read more
