Seattle, you have a problem. Details: Former Eastside Catholic Vice-Principal and Coach Mark Zmuda is now affectionately known as “Mr. Z”.  Mark Zmuda was fired last week for marrying his partner this summer which has touched off a lightning rod situation of equality vs. church doctrine.  Students of East Catholic have rallied for Zmuda’s  return with sit ins and protests effectively shutting down the school early for Christmas break. Saturday, students showed up for another rally outside the school and vowed that even... Read more

Check the pictures hanging in your rectory, guys.  You never know. Details: A portrait bought for £400 has been revealed as a long-lost van Dyck, worth at least £400,000 after examination at the Antiques Roadshow. Father Jamie McLeod, a Catholic priest, brought the painting to the show after it was originally purchased in a Cheshire antiques shop, with no mention of the 17th century painter. It was correctly identified as a masterpiece after the show’s host, Fiona Bruce, saw it... Read more

Some intriguing insight on Pope Francis and his personal imprint on Christmas, from the always-worthwhile John Allen in NCR:  In his brief speech to the Roman Curia on Dec. 21, Francis stressed the importance of a spirit of service in the Vatican, saying that without it, the place becomes no more than a “ponderous bureaucratic customs house.” He charged Vatican officials with striving to ensure that their work is animated by dedication to service, especially to local churches around the... Read more

Photo: by Daniel Estrin This is pretty intriguing.  Who knew? Details:  On Christmas Eve, thousands of Christians from around the world flocked to Bethlehem to celebrate at the traditional birthplace of Jesus. But a few miles up the road at a church in Jerusalem, something unexpected took place at Midnight Mass: the church became crowded with Jews. Throngs of Israeli Jews clamored at the gate of the Dormition Abbey about an hour and a half early to get a good... Read more

From the vault: here’s my homily for this Sunday from 2007. *** [Click here for the readings.] I’m struck every year by the timing of this feast, celebrating the Holy Family. It comes on the first Sunday following Christmas, and at a time when I think most of us – after the parties and cooking and visiting and obligations and expectations and disappointments — have started to have about as much “family” as we can take. Right about now, a... Read more

Here are some simple rules for living, from the iconic songwriter and troubadour: At age 31, he was in the prime of his life, with a wife and three kids, as well as a good deal of life experience, having survived the Dust Bowl to make it out to California. Details:  From the new year a handful of Romans will be invited to celebrate morning mass with the pope inside the Vatican. The 77-year-old pontiff is well-known for embracing the young, old and disabled when they gather in St Peter’s Square, or picking up the phone to make personal calls to individuals or families in distress. As the pope is also formally recognised as the bishop of Rome, he will have the chance to get to know the Catholics closest... Read more
