I learned in my days as a political reporter that most voters choose candidates with their gut. When I asked them why they planned to vote for a particular candidate, not one in 20 could find words to express it.
“I just like him,” they would shrug.
Trump’s visceral appeal is even louder than his ideas and words. That’s why the comments many consider outrageous only endear him to those who feel unheard. He has struck an emotional chord.
So like him or not, his candidacy serves to remind us the words we use really matter, the leaders we choose make a difference, and the person who is president has an effect on us all.
