Christians around the world celebrate Saint John the Baptist Day, an important Catholic feast day, on June 24th each year. It commemorates the birth of John the Baptist. He was a relative and forerunner of Jesus Christ. In three of the four gospels (Matthew, Mark, and Luke), we see John commissioning Jesus, in a way, by baptizing Him at the start of His ministry. John, however, protested against the idea.

…Jesus arrived from Galilee at the Jordan, coming to John to be baptized by him. But John tried to prevent Him, saying, “I have the need to be baptized by You, and yet You are coming to me?”
But Jesus, answering, said to him, “Allow it at this time; for in this way it is fitting for us to fulfill all righteousness.” Then he allowed Him. (Matthew 3:13-15, NASB)

John knew who Jesus was from the beginning of His ministry. Indeed, the Bible tells us John knew who Jesus was even while he was inside his mother’s womb.

…Mary arose and went with haste into the hill country, to a town in Judah, and she entered the house of Zechariah and greeted Elizabeth. …When Elizabeth heard the greeting of Mary, the baby leaped in her womb. And Elizabeth was filled with the Holy Spirit, and she exclaimed with a loud cry, “Blessed are you among women, and blessed is the fruit of your womb! And why is this granted to me that the mother of my Lord should come to me? For behold, when the sound of your greeting came to my ears, the baby in my womb leaped for joy. And blessed is she who believed that there would be a fulfillment of what was spoken to her from the Lord.” (Luke 1:39-45, ESV)

Obviously, John the Baptist had a very special calling on his life.

A Note About the Use of the Word “Saint”

Evangelical Christians do not recognize “saints” in the same way Catholics do. To our way of thinking, all believers have the right to be called saints, not just a select few. Further, this is based not on our works but on belief in the Lord Jesus Christ and acceptance of what He has already done on our behalf.

However, in this article, I will continue to use “saint” when mentioning the holiday because that is its common, preferred name. I want to be respectful of everyone who celebrates this day.  I also want to explore the history, customs, celebrations, and spiritual significance of Saint John the Baptist Day. Through this, I hope every Christian gains a better understanding and appreciation of this special occasion, as well as the person it honors.

The Significance of Saint John the Baptist Day

John the Baptist played a crucial role in the life of Jesus Christ, since he prepared the way for the coming of the Messiah. According to the Bible, John the Baptist was born to elderly parents who had been barren for many years. As mentioned above, his father’s name was Zechariah, and his mother’s name was Elizabeth.

His birth was seen as a miracle and a sign of God’s divine plan and purpose. As a prophet, John preached about repentance and baptized people in the Jordan River. This baptism symbolized the washing away of their sins.

As is the case with Christmas, Saint John the Baptist Day has its roots in both Christian and pagan traditions. Since the Church recognizes December 25 as the day Christ was born, and John was believed to be about six months older than Jesus, it makes sense that his feast day is celebrated at the end of June.

Incidentally, this day coincides with the summer solstice, which many cultures recognize as marking the longest day of the year. Because of the significance of this time of year, people around the world celebrate many different holidays at this time.

As such, over the centuries, Saint John the Baptist Day has evolved to incorporate various customs and rituals. Celebrants have blended together many different cultural and religious practices to create a unique remembrance of the man who helped the first century AD Jews see that they were going to need to embrace a new way of living and believing in God.

Customs and Traditions

People celebrate Saint John the Baptist Day with a variety of customs and traditions that vary from country to country. One common tradition is the lighting of bonfires, since John the Baptist was thought to be “a burning and shining light.” He certainly was the forerunner for the true Light of the World (see John 1:9 and John 8:12).

People gather around these fires, singing songs, dancing, and enjoying the festive atmosphere. In some places, celebrants jump over the bonfire. In their minds, this brings good luck and protection from evil spirits.

Another popular custom is the decoration of wells and springs with flowers and ribbons. The idea behind this tradition is that it brings blessings and ensures a bountiful harvest.

Many churches also hold special services and processions to honor Saint John the Baptist. These processions often involve carrying statues or icons through the streets, accompanied by music and prayers.

Celebrations and Festivities Around the World

People in many parts of the world celebrate Saint John the Baptist Day with great enthusiasm. In Spain, the city of Alicante is renowned for its Bonfires of San Juan. Residents make elaborate sculptures from wood and papier-mâché to display throughout the city. On the night of June 24th, people set these sculptures on fire and create spectacular displays of fireworks and flames.

In Canada, Saint John the Baptist Day, or La Fête Nationale du Québec, is a public holiday and a day of national pride. The celebrations include parades, concerts, and fireworks, as well as traditional French-Canadian music and dancing. It is a time for the people of Quebec to come together and celebrate their cultural heritage.

Connecting with Nature on Saint John the Baptist Day

In addition to its religious and cultural significance, Saint John the Baptist Day also encourages a connection with nature. As this holiday falls around the summer solstice, it is a time to appreciate the beauty of the natural world and the abundance of the earth. Many people take part in outdoor activities, such as picnics, hiking, or simply spending time in nature.

Connecting with nature can be a spiritual experience that allows individuals to feel a sense of awe and wonder at God’s creation. It is a time to reflect on the harmony and balance inherent in the natural world. In this way, we remember our God-given task of caring for, and protecting, the environment.

Recipes and Traditional Foods for Saint John the Baptist Day

Food is an integral part of any celebration, and Saint John the Baptist Day is no exception. Talented cooks prepare their favorite traditional dishes and recipes to commemorate this special occasion. In many countries, it is customary to feast with family and friends. This allows people to join together in fellowship while they enjoy a variety of delicious foods.

One popular dish associated with Saint John the Baptist Day is migas, a traditional Spanish dish made with breadcrumbs, garlic, olive oil, and various ingredients such as chorizo or vegetables. This hearty dish is especially popular among shepherds. It represents simplicity and sustenance, thus reflecting John the Baptist’s ascetic lifestyle in the wilderness.

Activities and Events to Celebrate Saint John the Baptist Day

You can celebrate Saint John the Baptist Day in a number of exciting ways. In addition to attending religious services and participating in traditional customs, you can engage in various festive activities.

Organizing a bonfire gathering with friends and family is a great way to embrace the spirit of Saint John the Baptist Day. You can create lasting memories while building the fire together, sharing stories, and enjoying the warmth and light. Just don’t forget to focus on the true light of Jesus, remembering that John the Baptist pointed others to Him his entire life.

Crafts and DIY Projects

For those who enjoy crafts and DIY projects, Saint John the Baptist Day offers an opportunity to get creative. Wreaths or garlands made with flowers and herbs are popular crafts associated with this holiday. You can hang these natural decorations around your house. You can also use them to adorn statues or icons of John the Baptist, if you happen to have those around. Statutes of this kind aren’t really popular in evangelical homes.

Another craft idea I really love is to create handmade candles to symbolize the light of John the Baptist and Jesus. You can mold and decorate candles from beeswax or soy to light during the festivities. This is a much safer and easier way to enjoy the light of a flame.

Reflection and Spiritual Significance of Saint John the Baptist Day

Saint John the Baptist Day isn’t just about the food and the fun. It is also an important time for reflection and spiritual introspection. It serves as a reminder to examine our lives, repent of our sins, and seek God’s forgiveness. John the Baptist’s message of repentance and preparing for the coming of Christ resonates with us. It urges us to evaluate our actions and strive for spiritual growth.

On this day, many people participate in religious ceremonies, attend church services, and engage in personal prayer and meditation. It is an opportunity for us to deepen our faith and strengthen our connection with God. Through reflection and self-examination, we can gain a renewed sense of purpose and commitment to living a life of obedience to Him.

And, by remembering John’s own words, we can turn our hearts and minds to the need for humility in light of Christ’s glory.

“He must increase [become greater], but I must decrease [become less important].” (John 3:30, NASB)

May this be our heartfelt prayer both today and every day.
