John knew who Jesus was from the beginning of His ministry. Indeed, the Bible tells us John knew who Jesus was even while he was inside his mother’s womb.
…Mary arose and went with haste into the hill country, to a town in Judah, and she entered the house of Zechariah and greeted Elizabeth. …When Elizabeth heard the greeting of Mary, the baby leaped in her womb. And Elizabeth was filled with the Holy Spirit, and she exclaimed with a loud cry, “Blessed are you among women, and blessed is the fruit of your womb! And why is this granted to me that the mother of my Lord should come to me? For behold, when the sound of your greeting came to my ears, the baby in my womb leaped for joy. And blessed is she who believed that there would be a fulfillment of what was spoken to her from the Lord.” (Luke 1:39-45, ESV)

A Note About the Use of the Word “Saint”
Evangelical Christians do not recognize “saints” in the same way Catholics do. To our way of thinking, all believers have the right to be called saints, not just a select few. Further, this is based not on our works but on belief in the Lord Jesus Christ and acceptance of what He has already done on our behalf.
However, in this article, I will continue to use “saint” when mentioning the holiday because that is its common, preferred name. I want to be respectful of everyone who celebrates this day. I also want to explore the history, customs, celebrations, and spiritual significance of Saint John the Baptist Day. Through this, I hope every Christian gains a better understanding and appreciation of this special occasion, as well as the person it honors.

Incidentally, this day coincides with the summer solstice, which many cultures recognize as marking the longest day of the year. Because of the significance of this time of year, people around the world celebrate many different holidays at this time.
