Dad Tired: Your Work, the Kingdom, and a Painter

I believe one of the most crucial passages in all of Scripture takes place in the beginning of Jesus’ ministry. He walked up to a couple guys and simply said,

“Come follow Me and I’ll make you fishers of men.” (Matthew 4:19)

Now, what’s incredible about this is that these guys are fishermen. So, Jesus was taking what they already knew, as their career, used the same language as their daily job, but tweaked the language to tell them that they would no longer fish for fish, but “fish” for men. And just like that, He changed their career path and the trajectory of their lives.

Which brings me to our career paths.

Now, if God has known us and was thinking about us since before we were even “knit together in our mother’s womb” (Psalm 139:13), and His good thoughts about us “outnumber the grains of sand” (Psalm 139:18), then the truth is that the same God who spoke the universe into existence has plans for each and every one of our lives. God delights in you! (now, for the record… it’s not about YOU. It’s always about Jesus. But, while we focus on God, consider what He thinks about you for a second! It’s incredibly humbling!!)

God relentlessly is pursuing your heart. He wants you and Him to know one another personally. Not only does He want us to know one another, but as we see throughout the Scriptures, He really does have a plan for each of our lives – a plan that works for our good and for His glory.

He has also gifted us with talents, passions, insights and ingenuities that we use every day. Now, we have the choice to either use these abilities to selfishly build up our own little kingdoms, or for the glory of His great kingdom.

So, ask yourself: what gift, passion, talent, skill, or desire has God given you, but you choose to use it for your own good and not for His glory?

I understand that this question can’t and shouldn’t be answered in a quick two minutes. You are probably going to have to pray, fast, and introspectively contemplate on it. Ask Godly counsel for their opinions. Wrestle with it.

Think about what God has uniquely designed you to do for His kingdom.
