Amazon Synod Portends Change For Church Well, here we go.  The long awaited Amazon Synod kicked off today in Rome and will last till October 27.  Already, the RadTrads are howling that heresy is making official inroads into the Catholic Community.  Will this synod be just the beginning of the end of Catholicism as we know it?  Hardly.  I have already expressed my reservations about the synod, but the catastrophism evident in the attitudes of critics causes me to hedge… Read more

A Heresy For Our Times Once, it was just grumpy alt-right conservatives complaining about the liturgy.  Then, it became radical rightists adding lists of perceived sins against orthodoxy by the official Church.  Finally, it has become a full blown heresy separating itself from the Roman Catholic Church which has handed down the faith unbroken for 2000 years.  Its name:  The Rad Trad Heresy, short for the Radical Traditionalist Heresy.  I may be the only one to have labeled it thus… Read more

Talking to plants has been in thing for years. Praying to plants is kind of strange. But confessing ones sins to plants is just plain weird. Yet, that is what Union theological seminary of New York did recently. From a tweet by Union Seminary, New York today: Today in chapel, we confessed to plants. Together, we held our grief, joy, regret, hope, guilt and sorrow in prayer; offering them to the beings who sustain us but whose gift we too… Read more

Don’t Worry About Harry Harried a bit by the evil in the world?  Make peace with Potter and his friends.  Fr. Dan Rehill, priest at St. Edward Catholic High School in Nashville should have thought of that before announcing the school was banning the Harry Potter books.  Apparently, after checking with some exorcists, Rehill believes that the books contain real curses that could spiritually damage young readers. O my gosh.  I thought we had gotten over this decades ago when… Read more

Morally Compromised NY Governor and Legislature Destroy Reputations There has been no investigation, yet.  There is not yet a credible allegation.  There are no other accusations against this man.  Yet the New York Law which went into effect yesterday has destroyed a priest’s reputation callously and totally without evidence.  The state justice system that allows innocent babies to be wiped out of existence, now also allows people to be accused of supposed ancient crimes by people who have kept silent… Read more

Recently, my friend Bishop Robert Barron let his righteous anger fly on his blog concerning the new Pew Research Poll showing that only one third of Catholics believed in the Real Presence of Christ in the Eucharist.  He and I were in seminary together, and he certainly deserves the title of Best Catholic Apologist.   He was right to be angry about the incredible aridity of Catholic Eucharistic belief, but he and other commentators have become incensed over this fact… Read more

A British survey earlier this month showed people picking C. S. Lewis’ THE LION, THE WITCH, AND THE WARDROBE, the first of his CHRONICLES OF NARNIA, as the most popular book in the land.  Last year it was chosen as the one book adults would most like to read again.  Lewis’ work topped 49 other books in popularity.  The fantasy novel beat out Dan Brown’s THE DAVINCI CODE as well as The Harry Potter series which rolled in at #3. … Read more

Few Christians in the West, know that Christianity in Iraq and much of the Middle East is on the verge of extinction, nearly martyred out of existence by constant persecution of radical Islam.  In the first millennium the Church in Iraq was huge.  Only when the Mongols showed up in the medieval era did things begin to get bad. Here’s a great article on the terrible crisis for Christians in Iraq. From UK Catholic Herald: Iraq’s Christians ‘close to extinction’… Read more
