Though we seem to be sleeping
there is an inner wakefulness
that directs the dream,
and that will eventually startle us back
to the truth of who we are.
~ Jalal id-din Rumi
translated by Coleman Barks 1
Are we sleeping when we think we are awake?
And waking when we think we are sleeping?
What is sleep,
and for whom is sleep intended?
Sleep has a very important role
in the health of the physical body.
But what of the spirit?
Amany Shalaby, Ph.D., teaches in her classes at
The University of Spiritual Healing & Sufism
that when the physical body sleeps,
we experience a minor death.
Could it be that sleep for the physical body
offers the spirit an opportunity
to wake from this walking dream?
And when we are in this slumber
an inner wakefulness
directs this dream
guiding us to seek what is real –
to discover the truth of who we are?
Call to the inner wakefulness inside of you
to guide you in your dream,
to guide you to return in slumber and in wakefulness
to the Essence of the One.
