Hello Rumi Tuesday! I looked for my self…

Hello Rumi Tuesday

Ocean Wave

I looked for my self

but my self was gone.

The boundaries of my being

had disappeared in the sea.

Waves broke. Awareness rose again.

And a voice returned me to myself.

It always happens like this.

Sea turns on itself and foams,

and with every foaming bit

another body, another being takes form.

and when the sea sends word,

each foaming body

melts back to the ocean-breath.

~ Jalal id-din Rumi

translated by Coleman Barks 1

Could it be that the life in body

is but a wave from the ocean

that emerges from the turbulence

of the ocean-breath –

the out-breath from the body of a Grand Sea?

When a wave reaches its breaking point,

it soon finds itself spread thin

atop the sandy shore,

or maneuvering through the many pebbles

or bashing against the jagged rocks.

It remembers where it has come from

and where it truly longs to be.

It feels the pull of the ocean

drawing it back home.

The ocean calls each of its drops

to return to be One –

the One which it has always been –

the Essence of the One.
