Clothes Abandoned on the Shore

Your body is here with us,
but your heart is in the meadow.
You travel with the hunters
though you yourself are what they hunt.

Like a reed flute,
you are encased by your body,
with a restless breathy sound inside.

You are a diver;
your body is just clothing left at the shore.
You are a fish whose way is through water.

In this sea there are many bright veins
and some that are dark.
The heart receives its light
from those bright veins.

If you lift your wing
I can show them to you.
You are hidden like the blood within,
and you are shy to the touch.

Those same veins sign a melancholy tune
in the sweet-stringed lute,
music from a shoreless sea
whose waves roar out of infinity.

from Love is a Stranger
~ Jelaluddin Rumi, translated by Kabir Helminski

Another quote from Rumi says,
“You are not a drop in the ocean.
You are the ocean in a drop.”

The ocean is within you,
contained within your drop.

You can reach it by traveling
into the depths of your heart.

This is where you find
the truth of your existence.

Leave the shore of your body,
and travel into the depths of your own ocean.

Swim like the fish to make your way
to the Light of Truth within you.

Listen to the music from your soul
that calls you home.

There is a hidden treasure
that longs to be known.

It patiently awaits
your return home
to the Essence of the One.

Sufi-Webinars-Living-Peace

New Online Program began January 31st.
There’s still time to join us.

We are blessed to live in “interesting times,” beyond the sublime order of angelic existence, and to seek the gifts that are hidden in the apparent uncertainty and chaos that periodically threaten to overwhelm us. This year’s federal election has blown away some comforting assumptions about where we stand, so this webinar series is a timely response to help us make sense of the challenges we face as a nation, an ummah, a community or family, and as all of humanity.

Join Dr. John Abd al-Qadr Davies for this special series to learn:

  • How to move from focusing on others’ failures to stepping into real responsibility for catalyzing constructive change.
  • How to connect with empathy to the hearts of those caught in fear, overwhelm or reactive blame.
  • How to recognize how others mirror for us the places that need healing in our own lives.
  • How to respond to prejudice, alienation or hatred, to defuse threats of violence.
  • How to live in peace, in love, now.
