Essence of the One
One who thought the heart belonged in the chest
Took three or four steps
and thought he’d reached home.
Prayer rug and beads, abstinence and ritual
Are a step on the path.
He thought they were the goal.

The heart may be in the chest,
but it contains a secret doorway
that opens to a vast universe,
an infinite reality.
Our guide, Sidi Muhammad al-Jamal ar-Rifa’i used to say,
“Do not stop with the outside pictures.
Go behind and behind and behind and behind…
Until you reach the Truth.”
Never stop seeking the deeper realities.
There is always more when seeking to know
the Essence of the One.
