Hip-hop hooray hoooooooo heeeeey hoooooo…. the next official gabbingwithgrace Book Club launches right here on Friday, October 1! Weeeeee! 🙂

Sooooo, I confess: I tried so hard not to like the Pussycat Dolls or their infamous song, “When I grow up, ” but that beat was just too doggone catchy!

(Lyrics:  I’ve got a confession, when I was young I wanted attention and I promised myself that I’d do anything at all for them to notice me…when I grow up I wanna famous I wanna be a star I wanna be in movies, when I grow up I wanna see the world, drive nice cars, I wanna have boobies.”)

That song put a catchy beat to the sentiments of many ‘o’ high-schooler, 30 something moms with kids & tweeny-bops.

Which is EXACTLY why…

I am super excited both to read this book & to offer it as our book club pick for the Fall!

Here’s why you should read this book, join my book club, comment like crazy & join the community of women seeking to unsqueeze ourself from unrealistic body-image expectations:

Ahem.  Here goes…

#1.    Margot (never met her, but hopefully one day) is a gifted author & the book -so far- is great!

#2.  If you are a woman who thinks about your body, your clothes, what’s “in,” what’s “out”, wants men to lust after your beauty, or has ever looked at a picture of Gisele Bunchen & wondered if your life wouldn’t be a lot better if your body was shaped the way hers was…

(Oh, so this is what someone 40 pounds lighter, but 5 inches taller than me looks like)! 🙂

#3.  If your in the grocery store & you see a magazine of Halle Berry wearing only a men’s tie, a men’s blazer & a skimpy brazier causes you to *sigh* because  you know, even if you tried to pull this look off for a romantic evening with your hubby, he would look at you like you are crazy & ask “what’s wrong with you?” or “why do you have my tie on?” or “what do you want?”

d5f65069…and so you just *sigh* again.  Because it seems, that Gisele & Halle are held up for all to see as this banner of sexy, goddess women of which us normal types will never be like.  And somehow, something in you just dies a little bit.  Why even try with such unrealistic standards?

#4.  You try to disguise your perceived flaws with granny panties, concealer, boob jobs, pricey botox or plastic surgeries.

#5. You look in the mirror & don’t feel good enough.

#6. You want to become more aware (or think about for the first time) how our culture’s distorted perception of beauty affects you & the young women in your life.

#7.  You are literally EXHAUSTED by the tug-of-war going on in your heart: The one side that wants to be a desirous siren and the other side that wants to reject the notion that women who have “perfect” bodies are somehow better off.

#8.  You have an inherent preoccupation with yourself: your butt, your boobs, your hair, your clothes, your beauty regimen, etc.  And your kind of sick of yourself.  You want to be free.

#9. Your hoping to get some great advice, parlay with like-minded women, get some healin’-up-in-this-mug & experience some good old fashioned freedom!

#10.  You starve yourself, over-exercise & other unhealthy behaviors to try to hit a standard.

I’m with you.  I’ve been there.  I’ve been there.  I’ve been there.

Um, okay fine, actually…

I’m still here.

I still hate my jelly roll.  I’m still obese.

I carry the tension of too-cute, not-cute-enough, too-sexy, not-sexy-enough, to prim-and-proper, not-Minister-like enough, not fashionable enough, too boring, to chunky, too-too-too much make-up, too light-skinned, too white-looking, too ghetto-black-girl looking, too much hair, too big hair, too big feet, too BIG boobs (like, seriously chop my friggin’ boobs off, their just too big).

I have all of those issues and more.  So, my friend, I welcome you to join me in FACING OUR CRAZY IDENTITY / BODY IMAGES /FASHION issues with ourselves.
