I had to cut a lot from the book, and this chapter was eccentric and zigzagging enough that it made sense to get rid of it. But I’m glad to share it with you guys now. Some of these thoughts will be familiar to readers–and some of them get recycled in the book itself, e.g. “Will I be gay in Heaven?”, because I thought that stuff was important to keep in–but I hope there’s enough new material to keep y’all... Read more

from Jeff Deeney. First, in July 2013: Last year when American Paradigm Schools took over Philadelphia’s infamous, failing John Paul Jones Middle School, they did something a lot of people would find inconceivable. The school was known as “Jones Jail” for its reputation of violence and disorder, and because the building physically resembled a youth correctional facility. Situated in the Kensington section of the city, it drew students from the heart of a desperately poor hub of injection drug users... Read more

This is a little 1949 satire–dedicated “To James and Helen Thurber,” if you want to place it in its social world–about a respectable family man in Decency, Conn., trying to figure out which genre of novel he lives in. He plunges strenuously from Faulkner to Greene all the way to Joyce, and the authorial voice shifts with him. At the same time Charles Swallow, our protagonist, is also trying to figure out whether he’s a newspaperman, an advice columnist, or... Read more

I know I say this all the time, but what really gets to me is the tone of contempt. There’s pride in the police chief’s condescending dehumanization. Like, he’s so pleased that he came up with this super clever way to put down a woman trying to get help for her family. Lenore Skenazy agrees: Ashley, Richardson, a mom of four who went to a food bank while her kids, ages 6-8, played at the park for more than two... Read more

on Ravenous, a cannibal Western with a Looney Tunes win-by-losing climax–yes, I loved it: 1999′s Ravenous turns up on a lot of lists of underrated horror movies. It’s hard to get people to take you seriously when your plot is, “Guy Pearce eats people in the Old West.” But now that I’ve finally taken advantage of “Ravenous”‘s availability through Netflix streaming, I can tell you: This movie is criminally underrated. It’s not just a creepy, haunting cannibal Western from the... Read more

Because if it weren’t for bad taste, I’d have no taste at all. First, preorder my book! Then read it, I guess, if you have to. While you’re reading, play along. Rule #1: Drink what I drink. If I had to suffer through Olde English–let alone vodka and chocolate milk–so should you. Rule #2 and ff: Take a shot: every time I emphasize that there are lots of different ways to be gay (/queer <– see, there it is) and... Read more

Hey people. Did you know I have a book coming out? THAT’S RIGHT. Pre-order that joint. The cool thing about the book is that it’s short. That means I left a lot of stuff out. Plus I wrote the book a couple years ago at this point, and my thinking on Gay Catholic Whatnot has continued to evolve. Therefore, to give you all a sense of how I approach issues of faith and sexuality (so you’ll buy my awesome book,... Read more

Last night DC residents gathered at Malcolm X Park (Meridian Hill Park) for a vigil to honor the memory of those killed by police. My own strongest impression was how raw everything was. This was an outpouring of pain. Various people had various proposed solutions–the Socialist Workers were there, doing what they do best, i.e. holding up well-designed signs (“END MASS INCARCERATION, THE NEW JIM CROW”), and there were some other groups at various points along the spectrum of plausibility.... Read more
