Is Society Trying to Rewrite the Holy Gospel?

Most have heard of and read the Holy Gospel. Is society trying to rewrite the gospel with a very different set of values? There is a “social justice” movement underway that is trying to do just that. Let’s take a look.

The Holy Gospel

The Holy Gospel is the “good news” that God has provided salvation for humanity through the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus Christ.  This meaning comes from the Greek word euangelion, which literally means “good message” or “good tidings”. The gospel is not just a set of teachings—it is God’s saving action in Christ, announced to the world and calling every person to repentance and faith. The life and teachings of Jesus in the gospels are a blueprint for your life. This is the path to eternal salvation:

  • Who God is.
  • Who we are meant to become.
  • How we are called to live.
  • Where our hope ultimately lies.

The Gospels don’t just tell a story; they form a way of being human that leads to communion with God. The most important relationship you can have in your life is your relationship with Jesus. Jesus changes everything for us through the gospels:

  • Revelation – They show us who Jesus is — the Son of God, the Savior.
  • Transformation – They show how His grace reshapes the human heart.
  • Imitation – They show how to walk in His footsteps, empowered by the Holy Spirit.

The Holy Gospel is the good news that God sent His Son, Jesus Christ, to save sinners through His death and resurrection, offering forgiveness, new life, and eternal salvation to all who repent and believe!

Social Justice “Gospel”

The holy gospel teaches us that the only way to the Father is through Jesus – image courtesy of Vecteezy.com.

In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, Walter Rauschenbusch, Washington Gladden, and other leaders of the Social Gospel movement taught that human society must redeem itself through social reform before Christ’s kingdom can come. Modern society has evolved this concept that includes critical race theory:

  • Defines the fundamental human problem as oppression.
  • Sees salvation as awareness + activism.
  • Centers identity in group categories.
  • Envisions redemption as equity achieved through human effort.

The Social Justice mindset places the weight of salvation on social reform, political activism, and structural change. It treats oppression—not sin—as the root problem, and it looks to human systems—not Christ—as the source of hope. While the Social Gospel rightly recognizes the need to confront injustice, it replaces the saving work of Jesus with the work of human hands.

The Catholic View

Jesus said:

John 14:6 – “Jesus said to him, ‘I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.”

Only Christ saves. Only His cross reconciles. Jesus’ resurrection is the only way to eternal life.

Social reform has value, but it cannot substitute for the redemption that comes from God alone.

About Dennis McIntyre
In my early years, I was a member of the Methodist church, where I was baptized as a child and eventually became a lector. I always felt very faith-filled, but something was missing. My wife is Catholic, and my children were baptized as Catholics, which helped me find what I was looking for. I wanted to be part of something bigger than myself, walking with Jesus. I was welcomed into the Catholic faith and received the sacraments as a full member of the Catholic Church in 2004. I am a Spiritual Director and commissioned to lead directees through the 19th Annotation. I am very active in ministry, serving as a Lector and Eucharistic Minister and providing spiritual direction. I have spent time working with the sick and terminally ill in local hospitals and hospice care centers, and I have found these ministries challenging and extremely rewarding.
